I would swap the 17 and 18 wire at the headlights. The highbeam indicator will still be sync'ed with the wrong filaments if you just swap the dimmer wires.

Get a caliper. Measure the diameter of the yoke sealing surface, and the inner diameter of the retainer where the seal presses into. With this info, go to your local bearing supply house. The 70 year old GM seals are leather which is fine, but that is a bit old technology. Nice DUKW!
