It's about time I get pictures of this thing on here! Here's my air raid siren:
This siren came from Lockport, NY, and was one of four in the town's civil defense system. It was mounted on the roof corner of a former elementary school where it was literally blown off the roof during the...
I recently got a pallet jack to use on my tire job this spring. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is how to safely use it to remove and install the super single wheels on my truck. Have any pallet jack users here fashioned some kind of a rack or wall to secure the wheel against when...
Good to know! I've never removed bead locks before but got a little spooked when I saw this video:
Perhaps @Gunzy can speak more about what happened here :ROFLMAO:
Maybe I'll hold off on buying bead locks. How much do they weigh? I know Eastern Surplus wanted $180 to ship two to my home...
I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with them. I thought it would be a good idea to have a spare or two in case they got damaged during removal.
I've seen something similar done with an engine hoist, where the tire it put under the two front legs and the bead lock is chained to the hoist.
I guess the DMV I took my truck's title to is used to dealing with vehicles with short VINs. The clerk up front handled it without trouble besides questioning the weight of the pick-up  I told her that I'm part of a truck restoration group and that my buddies had no issues with that with...
One of my friends recently registered a HMMWV historical by mail and didn't have any trouble.
What does its title or transferable registration call it? Mine is an "AM/GE P/U".
Speaking of bead locks - what are people buying for bead locks? I'm going to go through each of my wheels and replace them as needed as I do the tires. I see that Eastern Surplus has them for about $50 each (not including shipping), but I'm not sure what other options are out there.
Congratulations on getting your new truck! When I registered my truck as historical, I marked it as a passenger vehicle. As far as the DMV is concerned, the truck is a 14,000 lb pickup.
Whereabouts are you located? It's my experience that the DMVs located near rural communities won't care as...
Totally true. IIRC the HEMTTs can do 70 MPH all day long, and I'd probably take a HMMWV up to 55 if I had one despite how scary some folks here say it is. I'm just used to driving older, slower stuff. That being said, I usually don't have a reason to take any of my trucks on the interstate...
I didn't know any of the Leopard 1s were equipped with ECUs - haven't gotten that far into the Haynes book yet! I don't even know where to begin finding someone who could service or make a new ECU for a German tank engine! Although considering MTU is still an engine manufacturer, I'd think...
Add oversize permits to the list for road driving, unless you have an ag exemption, maybe!
I've thought about potential problems with sourcing parts for the foreign MVs, but it's my hope that I can work with a machine shop to get duplicates manufactured. I can do the CAD work - just need the...
Thank you for your insight! I could probably take care of items 1, 2, and 4, but for 3? It's going to take me a few years before I attain the rank of Colonel... And my wife most likely won't allow that to happen at home :ROFLMAO:
Thanks for mentioning the broker you used. I'll have to...
@1943ht - can you provide any insight into the customs process based on your experience repatrioting your halftrack? I'm wondering if there's a difference with the halftrack due to its age?
I was looking into importing used M113s and was reading that American-made armor can't be brought back to the US? Yet I can bring former Soviet armor in? :cookoo:
Going back to the start of this thread, I can't figure out why this is a problem to begin with. Was this brought on by someone who was in a crash with a FMV? Was it Green Peace or the Audubon Society about pollution?
I can't ever imagine this happening in NY unless someone commits mass murder...
It has to be easier than removing a fuel tank from my dad's M37. That thing was a bear to get in and out! At least if I have to pull the tank off my deuce I don't have to be under the truck the whole time :)
I've been talking to a mechanic with decades of experience on the Leopard 1 family of vehicles. He gave me these figures on engine fluid capacities, which is a twin-turbo 2280 cubic inch V10 multi-fuel diesel:
Engine oil change: 53 quarts (about 13 gallons or 50 liters) - About $180 15W-40...
