Unless you have weak batteries don't weld with the truck running, most alternators can't handle the loads and definitely don't weld on the truck directly with it running. Most good batteries will weld for longer than you will want and still start the truck

Okay here's my swing at making it idiot proof, take two axle engagement switch valves and flip their bodies in opposite directions then weld or screw the handles together so when one is on the other is off, so no chance of numbers 3 or 4 happening.
Yes Daniel you should be able to remove the air line going to the engagement cylinder and see if it has pressure on it or not. If you have pressure something is hooked up wrong or stuck open upstream.
Sd39u there are 3 positions on the transfer case shifter high, neutral, and low. Fix the interlock or disable it. Push on the transfer case leaver, and hold pressure on it, as you shift the transmission into reverse or 1-5 then quickly back to neutral it should slip the rest of the way into gear.
You guys are missing the actual cause of the problem the pintle itself is the main problem y'all are using to small of a pintle I had this same problem with a M101A3 and have gone to a much bigger pintle and have not had any more problems, if you don't believe me take your pintle and hook it on...
I am about to put the alternator and starter on mine that 74M35A2 sold me, I have changed to many of the stock ones. And the price of a new stock one is 300+.
