My thoughts are that a valve has gotten stuck. I would pull the valve cover and remove the rocker assy and see if you can work it loose by pressing down on the stem. Maybe you can break it loose by soaking in WD-40 or something like that.
Welcome. As you know, ball bearings found their way into Jeeps, trucks, tanks, you name it during WWII. I have never heard of some kind of issue with any bearings produced for the war effort. In fact, WWII era bearings are still serving hobbyists and industry all over the world. Good luck...
Oh a hoarder like me. That makes sense. Yeah bob trucks should be made from trucks that have lost their cargo beds along the way. Or better yet, not at all.
Sure you can find every single driveline part new or used with great ease. If your buddy has grown tired of this truck, I would recommend to him that he sell it and buy something else other than a dump with the proceeds.
