Sad to say that you might find it easier and faster to EASE onto the control levers and watch for movement. The top row should be boom-in and out, rotate, winch up and lean forward and back. The bottom row should be your outriggers...

Star washers shouldn't be reused. People do it all the time though, so go about it your way?

Yessir. I think you are good! Yeah, after a little while of being on the truck - and depending on where you leave the steering wheel (centered or hauled all the way one direction or the other) those boots will stretch out a little. No need to crawl under and and poke them back in place...

Yessir, Zipper Boots are supposed to be a lot easier to install.
Zipper installs "up" so you don't leak oil/grease.
It does look like it may have pulled loose from the "band clamp" that holds the boot in place. Check it. It might not be...
.
But then again too... You do have to have the spring compressor to re-install the springs and "keepers". Me personally, I would have taken the springs off with a compressor so you could have seen the oil seals - before you pounded them with a hammer and socket.
