There are things better than a remote. There are blankets made for winching that "tame the cable" if it snaps. Not having extra chunks of metal flying through the air when the cable heads in your direction. Maintaining and be willing to dump your rusty looking cable for new cable is smart...

Looks to me like the rear battery isn't being charged. AND the alternator attached to the rear battery isn't putting out enough voltage.
Any way you look at it, that back battery needs to be on a slow charge overnight. It should be showing 13+ running so the alternator "doing its thing"...

It has been getting steadily colder all day. Rain went away and the wind picked up - a lot! Made a delivery downtown and the wind was whistling down through those buildings. Almost blew me over when I rounded the corner into the building...
.
It definitely went from really nice warm weather to cold and rain here. Happily none of that white stuff falling from the sky on this side of the mountain! It was supposed to be in the 20's today. Talking Heads lied again I guess...
.
Seems that the process on the "other side of the pond" is a little more difficult than here - like we have talked about. Getting to know your adversary in advance of any battle is the same here as there though! ;-)
Getting to know the guy will start everything off on an even footing...

Not sure about your state, but here in NC the towing vehicle does have the trailer "covered" on the insurance policy.
@Coug and @Action are both right about the U-Haul policy if something goes wrong. AND just know that if something happens - Lawyers will be lined up to do their best to take...

Even if you don't have her ready for the rally, come on over anyway. Get to know some of the folks in your area. Those events are generally a good place to find parts if you need something. Helps give you ideas on what you may want to do to your truck too.
.
Definitely looks like you got a nice truck! The furniture being there too is a big plus as well too. If you decide you want to build out a camping vehicle, I would suggest that you hang on to the furniture.
Sounds like you have a good plan. Check out the fuel tank and maybe next the fuel...

An awful lot like the first Chevy with a supercharger on it. Hot Rod driver with a blind spot that occupied about a quarter of the space in front and to the right of me. Pretty amazing that at seventeen I never had a crash because of it...
"Stuff" in your truck window could cause the same...

Head gasket alone and running for 5 minutes wouldn't make it shut down the motor. It may be that the PO (Previous Owner) cranked it and there was "gunk" in the fuel tank that got sucked into the injector pump. Might be worth a really bright flashlight in the tank to look down in there to see...
.
It looks like you have a really nice truck VBsurfer ! You'v already mentioned that you have some tech manuals. Be sure to grab the ones specific to your truck here.
Welcome to the outfit! Snap up a few pictures of the engine bay so we can know for sure what you have under the hood...

The number on the "black rubber looking thing" (fused link) is amps (generally 20, 30 or 50 amps). They work just like a blade or glass fuse would - except the links are a one time "burn up and die" operation. Only reason it matters is that the links are a "slow blow" variety of fuses...
.
I really don't know. Not really sure what kind of rubber protectant should or could be used. When torque rods are built (at least in the old days), they have a metal sleeve that contains the rubber and ball. The old rubber piece is pressed out and a new one is pressed in when the old one...
