Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Did you use the "new" style head gaskets or the older design with the separate fire rings ?

    My newest turd: Jeepsinker's M49A2

When I was in the Marines in Motor Transport we had winch deuces that had the paper clips facing up. In fact we used to attach the winch chain and hook to them.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

At this point I would try and pull one piston out and see what was used for the rings. I believe you can sneak one out from the bottom. Putting it back will be a challenge though.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

If for some reason the rings where "chrome Moly" then you will have a hard time getting them to seat. When using chrome moly rings you need a courser honing job on the liners to help them seat. I don't know if chrome moly is even available for this engine, but if they did then that could...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

I only heard of the 20:1 and 22:1 pistons. So you say they made a 17:1 also ? That's barely a diesel.

Low air pressure buzzer is dead.

I personally have no problem with any safety device installed on any truck. As I'm half deaf the buzzer doesn't really bother me ! ;) . I just wanted to clarify the need for a "flashing" red dash warning light.

    DUKW Crash Fatalities

I'm not sure how many of the Seattle DUKW's are the stretch variety. The first Seattle DUKW's where used in the 1960's for Seattle's "Seafair" . They have been used ever since as the "ship" for the "Seattle Seafair Pirates" . There was another company that had DUKW rides but they where bought...

    DUKW Crash Fatalities

These are pictures of my last outing on the DUKW just last year. The third picture shows the Aurora bridge.

Low air pressure buzzer is dead.

Sad to say I live in one of those "communist" states ! Washington DOT is so very ANAL about anything having to do with safety. They actually have trucks that will stop any truck over 2 tons (commercial or not) and perform safety checks ! I know because I almost went to work for them. Since I had...

    DUKW Crash Fatalities

To all who have said this is not a true military vehicle you are wrong. I have ridden on these trucks and have inspected them personally. Having lived in Seattle and the Seattle area for over 56 years I can assure you I know what I'm talking about. The latest findings on this terrible accident...

Low air pressure buzzer is dead.

All trucks and busses today have both a visual (light) and audio (buzzer) alarm. Your correct in that you must maintain the "factory" safety alarm. In the case of our trucks I think a flashing red light probably would pass the safety inspection as most are not familiar with military trucks...

Low air pressure buzzer is dead.

This light must be a "flashing" light.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Are you still driving it ? Have you taken it out and really pushed it ? It really appears your rings are not seating properly. There is an "old" trick for seating rings. I really don't like to use it, but you can try this as your last resort before tearing down the engine again. Get a box of...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I hate it when that happens !

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

You put the new rings on in the right orientation ? There should have been a mark on the rings showing "this side up" . The compression rings have a taper on them which allows the compressed gas to force them out creating a harder contact with the cylinder walls. Other then that, you just need...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I went away from using the stock jam nuts as they are a "metal interference fit" type and always get screwed up. I use "Nylocks" now. Also a little "Anti-Seize" helps a lot. On the Deuce which uses a "special" nut with interference threads on top, I grind off the top and then use a Nylock to...

Anyone have code inspection issues with their MEP's?

I agree. I've never heard of meeting any EPA standards here in Washington YET ! This is a pretty "lets regulate the life out of you" state too . Mostly our inspectors just want to make sure you "paid" the proper "Fee" ! Though they can be real A$$'s if they choose to be. That's why I always have...

    75 mph in a Deuce

That transmission is shifting really good ! I have rebuilt many of these older "Dual Range Hydromatics" . They are great transmissions but they don't have torque converters (no staters ) only fluid couplers. So you don't get any torque multiplication from the coupler. You can install an older...

    Runaway Multifuel cutoff?

I know your post was 2 years ago, but I did recently try and install a Cummins shut-off solenoid on my Deuce. The reason I decided against it was I didn't want to depend on another electrical component to shut down my truck in an emergency situation. The manually operated valve works just fine...
