Get your quotes on insurance and registration and let that help you decide. Don"t turn this into a thread about those topics! The LMTV is a somewhat light truck with a 23,000 GVW, while the 5 ton is more like 45,000. Which more suits your preferences?
You are forgetting that modern tubeless rims are 22.5 and the 395 is 20. I pity the tire guy that attempts to mount a heavy sidewall 395 on a old 6 hole Budd 20" tubeless rim from a school bus or whatever.
Reorider on here did a very OEM job putting a winch on the front of a M916A1 Freightliner. Not the same chassis, but will give you an idea. Search for posts by him.
When the M172 is coupled to a fifth wheel, the front leading edge of the trailer just barely covers the front of the fifth wheel. In other words you don't need too much clearance between the fifth wheel and the knuckleboom. Just don't try to couple to any other type trailer (crunch)
The shackle is a commercial 9 1/2 ton and is an ebay item. The headlights are 7" 12 volt from your auto parts store. The headlight housings are mil standard, same as M151, HMMWV, etc. Contact Auctionaddict for the CTIS. I would INSIST that GL replace the breakers from an upcoming derelict...
The MD Juan panels will work fine. All the vendors with the complete tubs are MD Juan, and these panels make them up. A good bit of fitting and welding is involved, so minor discrepancies in dimensions will not be the end of the world.
I've been watching ebay for one to no avail. The mount is not symmetrical so making a right into a left is not trivial. Every now and then, GL/GP will auction a M1078 with the driver's side mount. This was for the dual SINCGARS radio deck with one radio with the amplifier and the other...
I recall when GL sold these out of Red River Depot about 3-4 years ago. I remember them bringing around $1000 ea. At the time, nobody had a use for them. There were about 30 or so of them.
I thought the transfer case was 1:1 in high range? If it were me, I would replace the direct top hole Allison with one with overdrive. That should get you into 55 mph. Fuel economy improvements are hopeless. The planetary axles are in the truck's DNA, no reasonable changes can be made there.
When you put it into forward, what exactly is happening? Does the engine rev up freely or is it stalled? If the engine revs and eventually it moves, sounds like the front band is way out of adjustment. You REALLY need the manual to work on this, but in a nutshell, above the valve body cover...
