All thru the '80s We had 2 model 15 Teletype machines in the radio station relaying UPI & AP news.
Both machines were maintained by paid techs on a monthly basis, and never gave any trouble.
Some things I'll never forget about TTY are the smell, sounds, and how much oil they used on them...
Valve tappets can make a ticking sound in step with RPMs.
A bit loose valve is loads better than one too tight.
It is a full afternoon job to set them, but good training and worth it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was taught military Diesel-powered devices (vehicles, gensets, pumps, eTc) were specified with specially hardened fuel pump and injector components to allow the use of arctic grade fuel, which lacks lubricity as it would cause gumming at extreme low temperatures...
The black smoke is indicating full rail on the fuel, normal for that condition.
White smoke usually occurs with a cold Diesel.
Blue smoke indicates burning a little oil, should dissipate when up to temp.
I've had many 3-axle MV trucks over the years, and the fallout is my old '67 M54A1 is the one I kept.
A few salient points about the G742 vs G744 5ton:
>Power steering is stock.
>10-bolt Budd wheels, easier to source tires too.
>Smallish Spicer 3053 vs a far more robust transmission.

The "Angry 19" needed that 100A system, as it was a 100 Watt AM transmitter.
The possibility exists that a pair of 19's were used in a mobile repeater setup, one bolted to each L&R troop seat.
The PTO clearance is adjusted with a gasket stack.
One starts with a thin one, and run up a couple of the mounting nuts gently to check if it easy to turn the output shaft by hand with it in gear. It probably won't be, so dismount it and add another gasket. Keep at it until you can easily...
The most critical part is getting the proper gear mesh on the PTO.
The hardest part is getting the bumper to line up with the extensions. A spud wrench really helps.
A simple safety system is to retrofit some Murphy gauges. In my opinion, genset monitoring has fallen victim to overthinking.
They are purely mechanical indicators and switches, and when properly installed will watch over your genset with high reliability...
Cut the old lug off, far enough back to not have green copper (acid damage).
If you still have enuf slack, strip the insulation off and crimp on a new lug. If no, get ready by reading the next paragraph.
If you can't find a proper lug or don't have powerful crimpers, take it to a welding...
Having driven my M543 gasser (yes, the bed was swapped by the local guard unit) some 200 miles from Yuma to Chandler, AZ was an experience indeed.
It was Summer, so I drove it at night to stay as cool as possible, and the blue flame from the tailpipe was just divine. That R6602 had plenty of...
