End of an era, saying goodbye...

Well, friends, this hasn't been the easiest decision for me, but I'm going to have to say goodbye to the M1009. I've had a blast working on her and have learned a ton. She was fun to drive, but the miltiary is PCSing me and my new posting isn't really going to allow me the time to work on her...

    m1008 ??

There are no "ex" Marines. Buy one. Then you'll understand how Marines feel about the Corps. Because the way you will feel about this truck will be pretty **** close. And even if you eventually stop driving it around, you'll never quite be the same again. It's sort of an...

    Radiator hoses

O'Reilly has them. I got mine in the store, but they have them online, too.

    IP Pump replacement

Use a crow's foot (crowfoot) wrench to get at the bottom couple of injector lines. Label them with colored tape or marker. Use a magnetic long socket to be sure you don't drop the crankcase bolts into the timing cover. Have a buddy to help turn the engine over for you so you can see/feel when...

New plugs, still white smoke & no start

So, after a long, cold hard winter and burning up my plugs, I got some new ones. Ordered direct from indusadist. Pulled the old plugs which were all pretty blackened and rusted, but none were swollen. Installed the new ones without incident. (All Wellman 070s) But nothing changed. I'm...

    ball joint castle nut size

Jag7720- Assuming you just did the ball joints? I'm in KC, too, and have an M1009. Need to do the ball joints in the next month or two. Curious how you made out for time and money invested. I could also probably use a hand doing mine. If you wouldn't mind posting any info from your...

Glow plugs on M1009 not getting any juice to them???

Sounds like it's time to get rid of the GP controller, get new plugs and do the manual GP button modification. Just do a search. Lots of info on the forum. Been discussed many times. Good luck!

Glow Plug Removal and Tool - internet sales drama

This topic has been addressed in several places, but I just had a recent experience I'd like to share. Mods feel free to move, sticky or delete as applicable. :D If you have swollen glow plugs, there's a tool that makes their removal a lot easier than snapping them off, pulling the injectors...

Time for a no nonsense, come to Jesus moment, about m1009

I, too, along with many on here, have a love-hate relationship with my CUCV. The love for me is from having a big green military Chevrolet that is relatively easy to work on. The hate is from having a Chevy that is underpowered, old and prone to unexpected failure. Add in the obsolete and...

    glow plugs

Don't know the life span of plugs, but when I got my truck all of the plugs were crusty but tested okay. A year and a half later, through two winters, all 8 are fried. But I didn't maintain them properly. Should have changed them out long ago. Anyhow, just ordered the Wellman 070 plug set...

    Alts struggling in the cold?

Belts don't really show any signs of wear, but i don't know how old they are. Will have to change them out first chance I get and tighten them up. Any quick tips on this? Potential pitfalls? 4boggin- glad to hear I'm not the only one who's had belt squeal in the cold. Batteries should be...

    Alts struggling in the cold?

So the weather here has been in the single digits to the 20s the past few days and the M1009 is having a time of it. Problem is, it's taking a good 3-4 tries to get it started (GPs need to be replaced, I'm sure), but they do fine when it's over 30, so, anyway... Once the truck starts, the...

80 in an M1009 too much?

I've taken the blazer up to 75 or so, but won't do it anymore. I pretty much won't take it over 60 now. Get's too noisy, vibrating and rattling around. Besides, at 55mph I get much better mileage.

    u joint?

O'Reilly has a Ball-joint/U-joint press you can rent for a fully refundable $120 deposit. Just put the clamp on and tighten it down until the snap ring breaks and it pushes the end out. Then flip it over and do it on the other side. Takes a bit of elbow grease and is easier if you have...

    need opinions

And I'm still waiting to see a good digital woodland or desert like our cammies in the Corps. Would be interesting to see what size pixels would get a similar optical effect on something as large as a vehicle.

    need opinions

Depends on what you want to use it for. As a hunting rig, I like camo. As a bugout vehicle I'd go with something that matches your local terrain (though that may match wherever you're hunting). I'd love to buy a second one and go with flat black, tint all the windows and put chrome lug-nuts...

    Does your CUCV transmisson hum?

I get a ton of noise in my M1009 over 45, too. Floor boards start vibrating and humming under my heels. More so, over 55mph. I just changed out the rear U-joint a few weeks ago, but probably need to do the front one on the rear drive shaft (at the T-case end). Probably need to check the rear...

    Check your balencer

Question- Checked the TM on harmonic balancer (listed as torsional damper) removal and install, but it's not clear if I have to remove the crankcase cover to do it. Also, a lot of the "how-to's" I've read say you have to pull the radiator and fan shroud to do this. I really don't think my...

    Leaking Injector Pump

As I've posted before, Stanadyne official price list for a warrantied rebuild is $390. So anything above that is pretty much extortion. If you're buying one, you can figure on about $250 or so of that being core charge. Most places will refund the core charge if you send them your old pump...
