2015 TX MV Rally

It is with a heavy heart that I post this message to all friends of Carlos Manning.

After returning home this afternoon, from the event, Carlos was advised that his wife's health has taken a major turn for the worse.

Carlos is now with her, at her daughter's house in Houston.

MD's have stated it is merely a matter of time, Hours to days.

Carlos and the family ask that you not try to contact them at this time, so that they can spend as much time with her as possible.

Those wishing updates, please PM me with a heading titled "MANNING", and I will update you as we know anything new.

Lincoln (nofearnohope) did a great job booking the Offroad Ranch for us and organizing the police escorted convoy to and from the museum on Saturday.

Jeff/Allison and John/Brindy did a top-notch job with their working display at the museum!


I really enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The camaraderie is my favorite part of this hobby! And then there's the big trucks.... My air compressor was on the outs last year, so I didn't get to enjoy the park. This year I had a blast. Both of my boys got time behind the wheel, and my wife even drove the Deuce for the first time.

This weekend was great, and I'm looking forward to the next one!!!

Since this was my first TX Rally, I never met the Mannings, but I pray they find some comfort during this stressful period.

Let me say that I had a blast, both at the museum and the camping area, and wish to thank Nofearnohope and everyone else who had a hand in getting the rally going. I felt like I met some new 'old' friends, and hope I didn't bore anyone with the natterings of an old man. I had lots of questions about my first CUCV, and everyone was patient and helpful.

Mike, I may steal your photo as my new avatar! I tried out the 4x4 gear ranges on the trails with Richingalveston , but stopped when I noticed that the heavily loaded box was flexing wildly on the frame. I don't think the M1031 is meant to perform on technical trails without something snapping. Fortunately, the only casualty was a jug of distilled water.

I drove 834 miles this weekend to test out my "new" M1031, and learned a lot about the truck as well as other MVs. Pulling the M1101 trailer with the tarp on really put a load on the fuel mileage. As I told anyone whom I even suspected might be interested, the M1031 normally gets about 15.5 mpg, but dropped to about 11.5 mpg while traveling 56-60 mph. The trailer pulled fine and stopped quickly, but the faster I went, the worse the mileage got. I was following Jeepsinker on the way home and drove 59-63 mph for about a 100 miles trying to catch him, but my mileage dropped to about 7.7 mpg at that speed. When I dropped back to 55mph, the fuel mileage went back up to 11.5 mpg. Next step is to test a M101A2 that has 1/2 the weight and much less frontal surface area (especially outside the outline of the maintenance box).

I hope to do the rally again. It was definitely worth the drive.

That's so funny. My deuce got as good or better mileage than your 1031.
Im just glad I made it home without my intermediate axle coming apart. I think it may have just lost the preload, so I'm going to try to tighten the rear yoke up and see how it does. I appreciate you running with me anyway.

Glad to see everyone again including new faces, I'm also glad I wasn't called to winch anyone out with the wrecker this year . Trailboss: You're not giving me much hope once I load up all my tools in the M1028 but then again I don't have the big box or covered trailer to pull around. NDT: We still have to drag-race the m915s off the line, you're not off the hook yet! HAHAHA!

All I can say is WOW! Another well oiled machine firing on ALL cylinders..... Lincoln, you are truely the "dear leader"! thanks for your efforts and to the "new guys" another big WELCOME to the afflication. I have once again survived sleeping in the back of the 1009, but next year I will definitely improve the arrangements. My truck started friday with the on again of again blinking #2 gen light..... but once I got to C.S. it never occured again....We definitely need to look at doing this more often, with MORE trucks!!
ps. Lincoln, I saw a broke down dodge between C.S. and Houston, had a free to good home sign on it, probably nothing new, thought you'd want to know........

I've been asked to sorta remind y'all who Carlos is, based on my last post.

Almost all know who Carlos is, even if you didn't realize who it was. Carlos is the 2nd "Original Man in Black". Carlos and his wife have been in the Surplus/Re-Enacting community here in Texas since the 70's. If you've been to a Reliant/Astro-Hall Gunshow, you've seen Carlos. Same for MVPA conventions. And at the event, he was the one set up INSIDE the museum building, selling surplus and collectibles.

Carlos is also active with the 6th CAV, the Patton Headquarters, and the Museum it'self. Listing all their accomplishments (behind every successful man is a good woman) would take too long. Suffice it to say, Carlos has been a driving force for many years within the Texas Military Vehicle and Re-Enacting community.

For those who were not able to make it to the TX Rally at the G.I. Museum this year... Here are a some photos of our exhibit and gathering place for the SS members. We received many compliments from students and attending public, as well as Leisha Mullins thanking for us attending and mentioning they will begin a fall event as well this year.

We were just talking about doing a Fall events that the off road park too, we used to a few years ago. Maybe I can have a truck ready for that one.

OK, there are 2 things I want to ask for opinions on. First, this is the second year we didn't do a T-Shirt for the rally. I had a lot of interest in having one. Please let me know if you would be interested in a T-Shirt for this rally.
Secondly, there was talk about doing a second rally this year. I have read on here that the museum might be doing a second open house as well. What is the interest in doing a second rally and would we want it to be tied to the museum or would we want to just have a Steel Soldiers weekend?

I would like a shirt. It is nice to coordinate times with the museum because that gives us a lot more access to swap meet type stuff. I really enjoyed all the different parts and cool stuff offered for sale there.

Leisha Mullins confirmed the G.I. Museum is holding a Fall Event that will not include the war reenactment... but more details to come later.

I would encourage a SS only event so that everyone enjoys the activities at one location... and a t-shirt to celebrate the gathering.

Jim Crouch has offered for the SS group to use his local ranch (by Richards Texas, ~ 35 miles east of G.I. Museum) for us to hold a weekend camping and/or Turkey shooting (shoot off competition) event. Some of his neighbors may join in on the shooting sessions and provide small trophies to the winners. Jim has a nice medium water tank section and also a very nice large meadow area that could hold all the trucks/etc. for the gathering. He only asks that someone take the lead on organizing and working with him on the details, and help identify the target weekends... either this spring or early fall when temperatures are nice.

This could be a really good event... of course we would bring the MKT (Kitchen) for cooking and setup shades for gathering areas.

Talking about shirts, I have designed a couple of shirts but never brought it up to SS thinking there might be a copyright issue or something. I have alot of experiece with photoshop as well as autocad so I would be willing to help out on a design if needed.
