before I install this transfer-case...

My sprag case blew-up a while ago, and M715 hooked me up with a great deal on an air-shift transfercase with a PTO unit. So now I'm finally getting around to swap and I've got a few questions.

I've already dropped the old case, and that went really smoothly, but is there anything I can check to make sure this air-shift transfer-case is in good working order? I mean, besides pulling the drainplug and hoping that metal chunks don't fall out.

Anything I should do maintenance-wise before I install it? I'd like to replace all the input/output shaft seals, but I didn't plan ahead, so I was going to order those on Monday and then just replace them after I've installed the new case (before I re-install the driveshafts). Doesn't look like that should be much of a problem to do with the case in the truck.

What about the PTO unit? Doesn't look like there will be much room to remove/reinstall it with the case in the truck, so I'm wondering if that's something that might need any attention now.

I just don't want to have to drop this transfer-case again. Ever.

Do you have all the plumbing to intall the airshift case?, there's more to it than just the case. Take the pto off first, and put the block plate off your old case on the new one. Other than doing a complete tear down/inspection, your gonna have to hope it's a good case, but, yes checking for chunks in the oil is always a good place to start.

Yeah, I got the dash switch with it, and I'm planning on re-doing most of the air-lines anyway, so that's no big deal. I'm going to keep the PTO. I've got plans for it. I just wanted to know if it's anything that I should service before I install the case in the truck.
The drivers side mount has to be reversed.
Say what now? I just went out and checked, and I installed the mounts exactly like they were installed on the old case.

When you swap the PTO, don't forget the dog clutch gear affixed to the shaft on the back of the old transfer case.

i would drain and replace the gear oil with new. And also check the vent.
Just drained the oil and there were some metal shavings on the magnet, but nothing that I'm too worried about. I'm going to pump-in some fresh Amsoil after I replace the input/output seals. And I CAN replace those seals with the case installed in the truck, right?

Good tip about the breather. Thanks, but I'm putting together a home-brew fording kit right now. So I'll be ditching all those check-valves altogether.

depends on what you consider a rebuild. seals and bearings are one thing. replacing anything with wear it altogether different.

I would quote anywhere from $300-1500.
Think I should replace the bearings when I do the seals? Who's got those seals in-stock anyway? And who's got the best prices on them?

Thanks, but I'm not swapping the PTO. It came with the transfer-case that I'm installing, so I'm just going to leave it on there unless I need to service it before I install the transfer-case. That's all I was asking. I just don't know anything about this PTO unit, so I'm wondering it there's anything about it that's likely to need attention.

There is an oil line that goes from the drain of the transfer case to the PTO. It's a steel line and subject t rust. Double check that before install.

I had to move the studs to the other holes.
Thanks, I'll double-check that.

EDIT: I see what you're talking about referred to in the TM, but I can't see how else the mount could be installed. Looks exactly like it was mounted on the old transfer-case. Am I missing something?

Yeah, that line was damaged (dented pretty badly) so I removed it last night and was planning on replacing it today. It was dark out, but I thought it was copper tubing.

EDIT: It is copper tubing. Going to get some more right now.

The shifter rod for the transfer PTO leaks on mine. There is an o-ring goes bad, it can be replaced in the truck, but a big pain in the but.

OK, thanks. I'll keep an eye on that. Anybody know what TM I should be looking for to read more about rebuilding that PTO unit?

Also, I didn't get any of the linkage or levers with this PTO unit. Would appreciate it if anyone could help me out with those parts that I'll need to make this operational.

This is weird. The top end of the oil-tube that goes to the PTO uses a standard compression fitting, but the bottom end (At the transfer-case) had this other type of fitting on it. I would like to switch it out for another standard compression fitting, but it's a 90-degree fitting and I can't remove it without disassembling the case. Where can I get another fitting like this? NAPA? What's it called?

That looks like a Parker compression fitting used on hydraulic systems. And it apears that the tube isn't shoved all the way through the fitting. Good thing you took it apart. You could probably knock the old piece of tubing out with a drift and maybe expand it far enough to reuse it, If you want to take that chance.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the tube not being inserted all the way. It's on there pretty good though, because I can't push the tube out of it. Would it be OK to use a regular compression fitting there? If not, I'll have to remove the 90-degree fitting from the back of the case and replace it with one that uses a standard compression fitting. That wouldn't be a big deal, except can't unthread that 90-degree fitting without partially disassembling the back of the case...
