You mean the 4 speed? Are there multiple versions? I see 3 speeds everywhere. I think the one I’m looking at has a 3 speed th400(?).
Yes. the 4speed. 4th is overdrive. The three speed is the venerable TH400.
There are two main configurations. The two man and the four man
There are three engines available. The 6.2L, the later/replacement 6.5L N/A and the newest 6.5L turbo
There are 2 different transfer cases. The early NP218 behind the 3 speed and the NP242 behind the 4 speed. Both are full time 4WD
If you are just cruising around town the three speed is more affordable and simple to maintain. It doesnt have any computer controls to flake out on you.
There are three GVWR as well 7700lb, 10000lb, and 12000lbs
The prices tend to rise with the specs. Early 7700lb two man, 6.2L ,three speed trucks being the most affordable

Thanks for the info, I just don’t know where I’d take it on that many road trips. The nearby lake is 40 minutes away but it’s backroads. I may eventually take it other places but at some point I’d like to get a wrecked Chevy and put a duramax but that would be well into the future. Someone has a relatively clean 6.2/3 for $11,800, I might see if he’d take $11,000. Might not but might be worth it to ask.

Has anyone been able to get a loan for a Hmmwv? I have the cash but I have been putting it away for a down payment on a house and I’d rather have it available to avoid pmi.

As was said, different configurations or versions. The models that are just a 3 or 4 digit number without A1 or A2 at the end are usually the early ones (not counting the 11XX series trucks).
Then came the A1 version. The standard and A1 versions are almost always 6.2L 3 speed trucks unless stated otherwise.
Then the A2 trucks came out, 6.5L engine and 4 speed transmission. The M1123 counts as an A2 version, but heavy suspension (M1097 is also heavy suspension, 10k trucks. Almost all the other ones A2 and before are 7700 lb trucks)
After that comes the 11XX trucks, which were built more with having armor and stuff like that, they tend to be a lot more expensive, have 4 speeds and turbo 6.5s (or some of the models do, I haven't paid much attention)


Some model numbers close to each other are the same truck with or without a winch (M1025 no winch slantback, M1026 has winch).
M996 and M997 are the ambulance versions.

M1097 and M1123 are heavy suspension trucks (some got armor kits added, but weren't necessarily designed for them originally) that are supposed to haul shelters and stuff. Without anything in the back the ride is a little stiff. M1097 was the Army version, has airlift bumper and some other stuff, M1123 was the Marines and didn't have the rear airlift bumper due to departure angles and stuff like that.

I just hope that a turbo system will be released as these get more popular. I saw BMI is going to release one but I wish the 6.5td fit on the 6.5na.

I may be getting one next week if I can figure out how to drive there and back, I just moved to Auburn and don’t know that many people. I Somehow have to drive4 hours away with my car and bring both back. Haha.

You can purchase and swap in a turbo engine from the site vendors or have a site vendor do it for you.

Yes and that’s extremely expensive, especially done by someone else. I don’t think I have time right now for that much of a project, an add-on turbo is a lot easier.

I am looking at getting a m998 6.5 non turbo for $11k, seems to be solid. I can also just keep it until some of the newer styled Hmmwv get out and about. I doubt I’d lose money on a $11k Hmmwv, someone in Alabama would buy it.

you’ll be disappointed as a HMMWV owner if you don’t like strangers coming up to you and asking about it, little kids pointing to it saying “army truck” or just about everyone pointing, nodding, staring or waving at you. If your wife takes it out without you...she will get proposed to. Just comes wIth the territory.

you will seriously be disappointed if you either don’t want to or can’t work on them unless your buddy was a HMMWV mechanic or you have a stack of cash.

they are impractical, loud, lacking virtually every comfort feature that exists in a modern vehicle and i will never not own one. i Love them. As a bonus my wife does too. If you do get one, in the first week it will leave a puddle of something on your driveway or garage. Don’t let this worry you, it’s just marking its territory.

I’m sorry but it’s probably cheaper and more effective to purchase a turbocharged used engine than utilize a turbo not designed for this engine.
Are you aware of the space and size constraints peculiar to HMMWV?

all depends on what you want to do with it and what your total spend limit is. aftermarket seats, new soft doors, new top...probably about $3k. don’t think you can slap a turbo on a 6.2 Or turn the fuel pump up and think you’ll have something you can drive 70mph on the highway. the 6.2’s in the 998’s don’t work like that. They are 55mph vehicles, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. if you want to drive it on the highway, don’t get the 998 with the 6.2.

No, SF’s stripped everything, literally 1-2 seats and that’s it. It has a hardtop with a spot for a turret but I’d have to also get a covering for $500.

Part of me just wants to get the $11k since I can keep it for awhile and then upgrade to some of the newer versions with the updated nose and turbo. $11k with 1/2 doors seems worth it for a casual fun vehicle.

$11k is less than a lot of side by side ATVs, and they just don't project the same type of image as the HMMWV does.

Haha, yeah. I don’t think it would be a bad investment as long as nothing horribly goes wrong, most things I can do myself. I will NEVER understand why people buy such expensive atv’s or those mahindras when you can buy something like this or a good TJ.

Spend $2500-$3500 for a new turbo engine with 4 speed attached tranny, or just spend $1500-$2000 for a new 4 speed tranny with separate control box, or 700R4 truck tranny with 1900 stall speed torque converter for $1000-$2500. I'm finally about to install my 765R4, but my local parkways are limited to 50MPH so for short local trips I've been fine. (I wanted the 4 speed to allow longer trips to go skiing.)

The speed limiting factor is NOT the 6.2 engine. It is the TH400 tranny without overdrive gear. From a horsepower perspective, the 6.2 and the 6.5 are similar. A 6.5 turbo will not make you faster, just able to get to speed a little sooner. High end is unchanged. You can get a horesepower boost by carefully advancing timing and increasing fuel flow at the IP/injection pump (but not too much or you will fry the engine with super hot EGT's). In my mind, the turbo will make things better on mountains and high elevations to maintain oxygen pressure to the cylinders. These are not like gasoline engine turbos... You won't be burning rubber at the stop lights.

2.58 differential gears with new rims and 40 inch tires on a TH400 tranny will increase speed to allow 55MPH without over rev'ing the engine. Stock rims and tires and 52MPH is realistic. If you want to go faster then you will need a four speed.

Buying the demilitarized stripped vehicle will cost at least $6k to get it back to 100% (by my estimate). You will need doors, and a rear hatch and C-pillar and the cap to cover that big ol' hole in the roof (just for starters). Buying the M998 A1 will allow you to drive a more or less complete vehicle from the get-go.

You mentioned giving girls rides... A city girl will most likely question the appeal of this vehicle because it is loud and lacks creature comforts. A country gal might appreciate an American classic. Either way, you won't need to worry about improving your conversational skills while driving. The vehicle is too loud.

I probably will, I think it’s too good of a deal to pass up. It seems solid, I just have to drive 4 hours away.....

What control box is necessary to make the 6.5 work with the 4 speed?

In Alabama, a lot of girls get tingly with vehicles like these. Haha. Daddy issues or just the vibrations? 😄
