FMV Plate Bill Introduced in Illinois

Late last week, Senator Mike Jacobs intorduced SB-3530, a bill to change the plate fees and requirements for our hobby.

The bill would set plate fees for former military vehicles at $100 for those under 26,000 GVWR, and $150 for those over 26,000.

for trailers the cost is $25 for those under 3,000 pounds and $75 for those over 3,000 pounds.

This would be significant savings instead of running commercial plates.

If you had a 915 and a flatbed, you would pay $3000 a year.

So here is a link to the bill:

Illinois General Assembly - Full Text of SB3530=

Attached is a PDF of the bill as introduced.

We have a meeting with the secretary of state's office about the bill and their CDL people are on board with the concept. We also have the two truckers assn saying their are ok with the bill so with a little luck we can get this passed and make life a little easier in Illinois.

If anyone has any questions please drop me a line.

Before anyone asks to many questions, I choose 26,000 becuase of CDL weights. a standard pick up truck plate runs $99, so I rounded it up to $100.

higher GVWR truck plate go up from there. So the $150 is real significant for us.

Current trailer plates are about $20 for those under 3000# and up to $1500 for those upto 40,000.

So we are at $25 for those under 3,000 and $75 for those over 3,000.

those fees seem pretty reasonable considering you would save a lot of $$$ using your 915 to pull a flat bed to go get your next buy from GL.

can't be used for commercial applications, or production agriculture. But you can make it your daily driver or move your buddy during his divorce.

I can under stand the cost savings on a truck, howver I don't see it on trailers. 8,000 lb plate is only 58.00 per year that you would use on a M105 trailer. If running a semi trailer it is about 98.00 for a non exp semi trailer plate, so why whould I want to pay 75.00 every year?

Outstanding!!! This is unbelievably timely....as I'm considering buying an M817 for a farm I own in Wisconsin, though I'm an Illinois resident. I read through what Wisconsin HMV owners are dealing with and can only hope they change the laws for current and future owners.

If I'm able to find a place to get a class B cdl, drive interstate with non-commercial plates....I'll be in the market for an M817!!!

Thank you for posting.

Well this may start a fight and all, but last month we had the Secretary of State's CDL people come in and give us a seminar on CDL and the requirements.

Under their interpratation Dueces don't need a CDL. And a 923 needs a non-CDL class B, because of the 26,000 GVWR.

As an excited new guy (who's been looking to own a HMV ...what guy isn't?)...I took the DMV's written class B CDL this morning without issue. I asked if there was a "Non-commercial" component and none was found on the application. I went with the type II (Interstate) under the qualification of "Occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation or in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise". This will allow for a class B CDL without medical certification.

I spent some time with the DMV rep explaining what my intention of the license is (driving to Wisconsin farm from IL home once or twice a year, hauling dirt/gravel for personal use, occasional trip to Home Depot, etc.....with a Military Dump Truck).

I need to take the driving portion of CDL, but my question after that would be how to register/license in IL for the most flexiibility (what's common practice/recognized by WI/IL and local police for legal operation).....?

Having fun!!

Thank you

p.s. I checked with State Farm....surprising how little full coverage is for limited usage (under 5k miles/year)

Do they have the same type of variance for the class "A" ?

Neophyte, cheapest is AV plates, (but you could not hall anything, car shows and such only), You could run a "H" weight plate, not cheap, best bet would be farm tags.
