i need some pointers with my first duce. it's the Hercules 465-t

i know this sounds ridiculous but is there a trick to help getting the alt/fan belt over the crank pulley? i cant squeeze it between the lower fan cowl and the crank pulley.

There are two 3/4in bolts on the bottom of the radiator. Loosen those and the bottom of the radiator should slide forward enough to let the belt slip past.

I keep a 1/4x3x24 flat bar with me. It helps push belts past that tight squeeze and applies tension to belts when they need adjustment. It stores right inside the passengers side door between the door and the seat legs on the floor.

thanks, they both sound like easy options.

i do have one more question about the belts. the fan has a 2 groove pulley. one belt wraps around alt/fan/crank. it looks like the second belt just wraps from the fan/alt. is that correct?

no, 2 belts go around the crank, fan, alt, and one goes around the crank & air compressor.

When you get belts for the alt, ask for a "matched set". They will last longer.

i will look at it closer today. i think what i saw is the alt and fan both had 2 grooves now with nothing on them right now. the crank only had one groove free. this may have something to do with a hydrolic steering was added at some point and may be using one of the belt groves off the crank.

i'll let you know what i find.

I got the belt on and i had to loosen the bottom raditor bolts and use the push stick idea. so thank you both. here are some pics.

Those are there to drain water that collects, not to drain the fuel. Just prepare to smell like fuel for the day. Got any pics of the power steering setup?

Not sure, its not stock. Since the DSPO hacked the steering column, it very well could be for the horn, or the ejection seat. Press it and see what happens.:gimp2:

I do use the petcocks to drain my final filters, I hook a rubber hose to them and run it down to a can. I run oil mix so doing this is less messy, loosen the bolt on top and then open the petcock to drain, then remove....lot less mess.
