M923 Rear Hydraulic Winch Install

Ok so here is a thread I am going to do on installing a DP Hydraulics winch into the rear of my truck. This will take me about 2 weeks or so. Hopefully no more BUT we all know how Wile E Coyote projects go.

Unit arrived today from Cleveland, TN. It was advertised as a 50,000lbs DP winch. Showing up it is a 60,000lb model. Old enough that they don't list it on their site for it's specs. So I fired off an email with the model and serial number to see what they can tell me about it.

Overall Dimensions Width: 48" including mounting base. Winch itself is 41" wide.
Front to rear depth : 24"
Height : 26"
Weight : 1,375lbs


It is pretty big looking in the back of the F-250. Cable is rusty and doesn't have much on the spool so I will probably go down smaller and add a little extra length.

Hopefully I will have all the specs on the winch tomorrow.
My plans are to run the winch off an aux gas engine. Probably a 25hp V twin and its own pump and tank. Maybe a future front winch but not as big but easier to hook into the same system.

May get to setting it in the back tomorrow and find a potential mounting setup. My plans are going to be to cut the bed out right around the frame and add braces for the rear of the bed to go the ouside of the frame. Remove part of the risers the bed sits on. Use a 3/4" plate that I have and mount it to the frame and also with 2" x 3" 3/8 angle iron mounted to the frame (same way the 5th wheel plate it mounted to the tractors.) Winch sill be bolted to the 3/4" plate accordingly. Probably by five or six 5/8" bolts on the front and on rear of the cross mount. It will sit a little high in the bed but the tailgate will hide it. It will sit with the fairlead up against the tailgate.

The pump setup will be gone thru when I get it all together. I am going to be looking at a 30 to 40gpm pump.

Are you going to regulate your hydraulic pressure down accordingly for smaller cable, to help keep Wile E. Coyote at bay?

It will depend on what the pull speed is on the motor when the specs come back. It will be regulated for sure. So far i have almost $900 into it with the winch. Taxes and shipping on it. I will be out under $2000 is the goal

A 50k high speed at 2700psi and 60gpm will pull 38fpm with 7/8 cable

So I got my base measurements for the truck well width and height. It is 2ft deep so that isn't going to matter really.
Red mark to red mark on the rear is 44" which is the overall width. 4.5" off to the side of each bumperettes. It is 11" from the frame to the bottom of the bed. so it will stick up 14 to 15" over the bed line.

Unfortunately the company could not do much with the model number or serial number today. Said they would get back with me in a day or two.

Mostly for recoveries so I do not have to put my truck down in slop with no bottom so it. Makes it so when i get 5tons stuck playing in the mud th
e snatching with a a strap doesn't have to come into play. If i get drug in i can always anchor off to tree. Also makes it easier to get my truck out of places. It is a little big but there is no such thing as over kill with these trucks. Last slop we were in on July 4th was 3 to 4ft ruts

It amazes me how easy I can drag that truck with the winch.
We have used a backhoe as an anchor (stabilizers down & buckets dug in) for it.

Sometimes it takes just that. Places down where I get recovery calls from there are lots of trees and if I can get close enough to use the cable and not have to risk tight areas and what not it will help. I don't think anything down there I recover (1 tons on big tires) is going to drag me in. Most of the pull outs are just at idle in reverse. Doesn't take much on a pickup. Plus when the big trucks go play we have a tendency to tear the ground up bad even while trying to pull each other out and it just slop. I have a 140ft strap I can add on as a anchor out or to extend the cable further. I like the way the MMRS trucks use a hydraulic spade to go into the ground on 4 sides of the truck to keep it from being drug in.

Here is the only information that DP Hydraulic or whoever it is now could give me. A Sales sheet and basic data sheet.

Yes it reads 80 gpm pump will pull 111feet per minute with 1" cable. Beyond crazy.

I have a similiar plan, since I already have the parts. Going with the old Dayton and hydraulic boom I got with another project.

Will go on the back of the M932A2 as a tire hoist with the winch in-between the frame rails.

or I think about taking the front winch and sticking it in back, which would fit between the factory rails pretty easily.

So this morning I finally got done making the cover for the one end of the winch. It was missing so I had to make a new one. This winch apparently went obsolete in 1982 so parts aren't going to be found easily if at all. The inside behind the cover is a little rusty so I am going to try to clean that u before it gets sealed but I have gotten one more step closer to it.

I was going to try to cut the truck this week for the mounting plates but feels like temps of 110+ really make me not want to get the plasma cutter out. We shall see what I can get done this weekend.

So I started cutting yesterday afternoon. Had to get some motivation to use the plasma in this 100degree heat. I cut the bed out in pieces so it was easier to manage and take apart. Picked up a 4ftx8ft piece of 1/2" plate. I only needed a 4'x4' piece but they didn't have anything smaller than the 8ft. So yes managing that big chunk of steel is a PITA. I already had some 1/2" bars that were 7" wide and about 20ft long.

It will be a box mount around the winch. The plate is sitting on top of the rear cold rivets and is welded up off the frame in the front. I am going to do under supports to the frame with 3/8" angle iron. as well as add more angle iron to the rear of the bed like the two I already have in for support. Will hopefully finish off the box welds in a day or two and drop the winch it. The base of the winch will be welded to the plate but the winch will still have bolts on that bracket that can be removed for it to come out if need be.

Too hot at the moment and the rain is moving in for a few days to get any more work done on it.

Ok i am back at it. Went over to a 45k unit from a 916 that i bought off John. Got the winch in the hole. Going to hook the plate to the frame with 1/2" angle iron 3"x3" and 5/8" bolts. The plate had another piece of half inch 8in Steel plate under it to level it off with the cold rivets in the frame. Then just weld the plate to the winch frame.


Got the hydraulic valve box installed. Its welded to the bed some but it has bolts from the bed thru the box. It is just the cut down 916 valve box.

Hydraulic tank options are in the works but i don't think i am going to use the stock tank unit.

I am looking for the transfer case PTO to run the pump. OR I may go over to small gas independent engine with a 25 to 30gpm pump


And as far as before about the being drug in while winching part. I was able to acquire some wrecker spades to hook to the rear clevis should that arise.

60 K is Waaay overkill for that job. The Dp will be faster than the 45K Military winch and keep n mind that with a snatch block or two you can go down into the 20K winches and have plenty of power. Military winch tend to be UNDERRATED by quite a bit. No matter which way you go,you'll have plenty of power.

There is no overkill when it comes to a winch on a big heavy truck. 20k winch isn't tall enough to sit in the hole and be able to clear the bed. 45k sits up higher especially well for the m322 trailer to pull stuff on with. An SEE on 4 flats is a heavy dude trying to climb the 4ft up to the deck on 9ft ramps. I would rather have the 45k and dial the pump back for speed.
