We had fourteen vehicles total: 2x MB/GPW, 3x M37, 2x M1009, M1028, M998, M931A2, Navy CJ2A, Army CJ3B, M35A2 Gun Truck and the V. The one running M38A1 in our group was not running that morning... WE SURE COULD USE ANOTHER ONE!!

Thanks Louie. [thumbzup]

Linx, I feel the pain of fuel costs. I took three vehicles to this parade, it is 38 miles each way for me. The 1009 gets around 26mpg, so no biggie there, but the M931 gets between 6 and 7mpg on diesel, and the V100 is only getting around 3mpg on premium gasoline......:???:

And yep, all my kids have the OD bug! They have all gone to events with me for years, and I am pleased that even my college-age daughter still wants to come play. She wants to start driving the Unimog to events. My younger son will take over from her as the 1009 driver until he gets old enough to drive the bigger stuff. Of course, as far as he is concerned, the V is his. :)
The family that plays together...[thumbzup]

Cheers

Rory Sounds like the V still gets the worst gas mileage ever. We always got fuel ever place we could. Plus, if you have the bads vehicle use it. And your young boy driveing the V most Why not. I don't think he could hurt it. (Other than the rear end which is the weak link)

The V tends to run very rich, thus uses a vast quantity of fuel. A buddy of mine who is an absolute whiz with carbs has tried and tried, but can't get mine to tune well and stay that way. Mine is an original carb, carefully rebuilt, but has some issues deep in its heart somewhere.
I have planned for a while to take B3.3T's advice and go ahead and do the swap to the Edelbrock, but just haven't gotten there yet. His advice has been sound in other areas, and much appreciated.

It is a pleasure to watch my boy and his approach to the vehicles. He is very calm and professional, and a good driver. The Marines have taught him well, and he obviously listened. When he drives, he makes it all look precise, smooth and easy. He drives the V as if it were mine and I have to pay for anything that breaks! :driver:
I will wait impatiently each day for him to get back from his Afghan jaunt.

Cheers

I had the pleasure over the weekend of doing two events in two days with the V.
Pawnshop, Reloader64, my girlfriend and I took four vehicles to a local car show Sunday morning.
The V was popular, but I had one visitor who stood out.

Pawnshop watched two gentlemen approaching, and saw the point at which one of them spotted the V. He said the man's face lit up and he made a beeline over.
When he approached me, he said "Hah! M706! Haven't seen one of these in a long time!". He is the first person to call it that to me.

He went on to tell me about being an Army convoy commander in Vietnam, and how the MP's escorted his convoys with V's, which he also referred to as a Duck. He mentioned that this was in the Long Binh area in 1969.

I asked him if his escorts were the 720th MP, he said "Yes!".
I told him that my V served with the 720th in 1968/69.
He stopped, then turned and put his hand on the V and said quietly "So this old girl probably protected me..."
He inspected it quietly for a few minutes, came back and chatted some more, then thanked me for preserving it and went on.

Such moments seem so short.

Cheers

Rory Our Prayers are with your Marine, and your Family for his safe return.
Remind him to listen and learn for the the old guys in country.

Great story about the V. I don't remember us calling it a Duck, we called it our car or the V.

Thanks Louie, I'll pass him your advice.
Some buddies who work for alphabet agencies have helped teach him a personal version of the stuff we have been training Army folks on before they deployed. I think he is better prepared than most.

Cheers

I just read this entire thread and want to say Thank You. But it really never seems to be enough. The tidbits of stories, helpful information, great pictures, dedication, hard work, sacrifice, planning, and inspiration of this thread, and site is just astonishing. Keep up the great work and the dedication.

I've had similar experiences, some USAF guys, too. One guy drove 200 miles with his grand kids just to see it and show them. For that, I let him drive it around and give them the experience.

That is very cool. I'm looking forward to meeting a couple of V100 veterans (Louie and Vann) in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the kind words, Durango. Semper Fi brother!

Cheers

Rory,

Anytime brother. If youd like Ill try to get ahold of a couple former USMC MPs I work with, one of which says he was assigned to a sensitive site for a little while if they have any V100 series stories and Ill post them up if they allow me to. Take care and keep up the great work.

Heres a story we at the 630th, MP co Convoy plt. put Santa in the turet one of our Vs And took him to the orphange on Cam Rahn Bay. The little kids loved it here came Santa with toys and candy for all. Everyone in the company gave something for the little ones. the pictures of this I think are on our Web page 630th Military Police of Vietnam. Also, check out the web page Military Police of Vietnam.
