Made the trip to New Bern (~45 mi away).

Set the transmission to top out at 5th gear and pedal to the metal: a blistering 36 mph.

Obviously the truck was very popular, as I accrued a significant fan club behind me.

The leather seats a deceptively comfortable, I must admit. Beautiful morning for a drive, too; just before it gets stupid hot here.

Back to the Teufelsberg field station with the Unimog. It don´t look as steep as it is. Good look over the green lung of Berlin City.

Ahhh..yes. In the 70th there was a ski slope at this point . There was a simple ski lift with a rope driven by an electric engine. But after a few years that was canceled due to interfere the field station.

Lot of fun for our retired aircraft tug UNIMOG 406.145 build in 1975.

Pic. 1 Here we are on the road again in the trusty 1953 M38A1 Jeep. As I promised in the first post, the CO and I are heading West up the hill to the famous Aurora Gold Mine, in Aurora Nevada.

Pic. 2 Here we are approaching one of the 3 oasis in the valley.

Pic. 3 The road crosses the pond, and with the cool water and the shade trees the temperature drops 10 to 15 degrees. Most welcome since today the temperature was 98 degrees.

Pic. 4 The spring water flows out of the rocks behind the trees and is piped to the pond. The water temp is about 60 degrees, and is cold.

Pic. 6 The CO likes this spot and wanted to spend the rest of the day here. But were on a tight schedule and we had to get going.

Pic. 7 Almost forgot. This beautiful spot is named for H.D. Fletcher. It was a Stage Coach and Pony Express stop. The Bunk House where passengers and crews could put up for the night still exists about 30 feet from this plaque.

Pic. 8 Here is the Bunk House. I am amazed this place still exists since it was built in the 1860/1870s. It's built of stone and wood and is in serious need of some TLC.

Pic. 10 Last but not least. A couple years ago, the State of Nevada installed a much needed Head out here at the Oasis.

Pic. 11 I think even Senior Drill Instructor Hartman would find this Head Sanitary and Squared away.

Pic. 12 Were on our way. The Caterpillar Tractor in the background maintains all the county roads in the valley. It is one busy piece of equipment during the week.

Pic. 13 Were getting there. There is nothing out here but Coyotes and an occasional Mountain Lion. You don't want to break down out here.

Pic. 14 Were close, just saw a company pickup go by.

Pic. 15 Time for a picture. I serviced the oil bath air cleaner this week, and with all the dust out here I'm glad I did.

Pic. 16 Ah, finally the road to Aurora. Got some Thunder Storms moving in!

Pic. 17 This was the original smelter at the Aurora mine in the 1860s. Today it's about 2 miles from the main gate.

Pic. 18 A history plaque about the Town of Aurora. The town is gone, but the mine and cemetery still exist.

Pic. 19 The gate, weigh scales and shops of the Historic Aurora Mine. It's a Sunday so not much going on. If Gold makes it to 1900/2000 an ounce, this place will be open 24/7.

Pic. 21 A visit to the Aurora Cemetery. There are a couple of bad guys interned here, but most were hard working good folks.

Pic. 22 The road to the cemetery. You need a 4 wheel drive here, the road gets rougher further up.

Pic. 23 Entrance to the Cemetery. It's very quiet and peaceful here.

Pic. 21 A National Forestry sign. Who would have known, Mark Twain lived in Aurora as a miner for 3 years.

Pic. 22 A remembrance in Honor of Veterans who lived, worked, and died here in Aurora. They fought in the Civil War, Mexican War, and the War of 1812. Some history here!

Pic. 23 A husband and wife from Ireland who passed away here in the 1890s.

Pic. 24 This one brought a tear to my eyes. Little Evelyn Boerlin didn't live to see here 1st birthday. Another grave site here has 4 children from the same family. Ages 2 thru 8.

Pic. 25 You can still be buried here at Aurora. Here is a couple from Hawthorne NV. It's quiet and serene here.

Pic. 27 Leaving Aurora. We had a great time. Saw some things, learned some things, and was amazed by things.

Pic 29. Time to head up Lucky Boy Pass and call it a day.

Pic. 31 This is a Silica mine in Lucky Boy Pass. It's quiet now waiting for Silica prices to surge.

Pic. 32 Home at last. The CO had a good time as did I. Best of all the old M38A1 got us home again with no complaints. Now for dinner and a Cold Beer at Joe's. Sounds good to me!!

Pic. 1 & 2. When I purchased this Jeep several years ago, it had no oil filter and an oil tube with no breather. So I found an oil filter canister complete with mounts, filter, and hoses. I also ran across a brand new oil tube with 2 breather ports. Pic. 3 Also the engine had no fan shroud. So I purchased a brand new fan shroud on e-bay. I'm now working on installing the correct double diaphragm fuel pump. I have the pump but I still need the spacer block, gaskets, and long and short mounting bolts.

cobra5, most M38 & M38A1 distributors are made by Autolite. Mine is made by Superior Magneto Corp., but it looks identical to the Autolite units.

It is almost like the people who designed the truck might have actually used one at some point in time.
That access to see the hitch is a REALLY COOL feature!

Right, and the sieve/screen at the end of the exhaust pipe (last pic) prevents passing glowing soot from the diesel engine blowing into the wheel well from the plane. A savety feature.
