Survival 109 build

Did a little bit with the wheels yesterday and today after work. Separated them and cleaned up the mating surfaces and the o ring area with a wire wheel. Did a light coat of paint. My new o rings and valve stems arrived today. So I installed the valves and test fit the o rings. Pretty fresh too, dated 1-15. Will ATTEMPT to mount the tires on the wheels tomorrow. Not so sure how that will work out. Can hardly pick up a bare wheel.

Whew, TIRED today. Mounted my new tires and got them on the truck. What a job. Next time I think I'll summon some help. Ugg. Too much weight for this old man to wrestle around. Getting the tires on the wheels wasn't too bad, used some bead sealer on the new o rings and anti seize on the wheel mating areas to keep them from rusting together. The biggest problem was getting the beads to seat so I could air them up. The wheels are 11" wide and the beads on the tires were 7" wide at rest. If I had a bead blaster it would have been cake. As it was, it was rotten pie for awhile. First I tried to use a ratchet strap to squeeze the tire, no luck. Then tried starting fluid and lighting it, not. Then charcoal fluid, nothing. Pulled out all of the stops and used gasoline ( kids don't try this at home ) , just about burned up my tire. So after warming my lawn chair for a bit, I figured I try something that wouldn't work. Tada, it did. I used bead sealer on the inside bead and with the wheel supported off of the ground, I placed one of the old wheel o rings in the wheel just outside of the tire bead. Started airing it up, and it did. The o ring rolled under the bead as it moved out to the wheel lip. I'm hoping that it all rolled out, seems to have, no leaks so far, and boy did I check for leaks. So got both to seat and then for the fun part, getting them on the truck. Pulled the 11.00's off and without too much effort, was able to get the 365's on. I think they helped the looks of the truck a good bit. Should be better off road too with the increased flotation. Hoping it doesn't adversely affect the steering. Cycled the steering and to the right it is a tad closer to the steering arm than before, and closer than I like. Previously adjusted the steering stop for clearance. May have to again.

I think you will need to adjust the steering again. When that spring starts moving the tire will hit that arm.

Yes I agree. I'll be road testing next weekend, will check for witness marks and adjust accordingly. Already have a 3/4" thick nut welded on my right steering stop. Don't want to add more if I don't have to.

Finally got around to reinstalling the air tanks today. I relocated them about 6 inches lower to clear the battery compartment I built in the floor. All fit in well, still well above the dual fuel tanks/brackets. If I see the need, can easily add a skid plate below the tanks. I slotted the brackets on the curb side like stock to allow for frame flex. Double nutted the slightly loose bolts, will add a rubber bushing later to each bolt.

Thanks AA. No, it's a regular manual bleed valve, just pull the cable. Guess you could run it into the cab...

I did both 109's in 11x20 and 12x20's. Only two times on joker and that should have killed me if I were a lesser man.

Got my AVM hubs today from the SS group buy. Installed them and checked operation. Good to go. They don't even stick out much with the wider tires/wheels.

Got a few things done today, prepping for the Memorial Day parade Monday. Finally after a year plus without an operational passenger side wiper got the electric motor and arm installed. Was going to wait until I replaced the rusted out upper frame, but doubt that will happen very soon. And I even have the part. Also swapped the auxiliary fuel tank filler to the other end of the tank. Cleaned out the sludge and tested the intank pump. Runs well and pumps a high volume. Installed a patch plate over the old filler location.

What's the story on the parade route pavement:

- Are those individually laid bricks?

- And is that some kind of trolley "cable groove" right down the center?

Thanks AA. I believe they are real bricks, the City renovated downtown a couple of years ago. No grove, just a double line of white bricks for the center line.

Wow, the City Council in Winter Springs sure has its act together. Labor intensive, but sure does look sharp.

City of Sanford is where the parade was held.

Was out with family most of today, but did get a little project done. Mounted some small tie down D rings on the fenders just in case I want to secure something there. I may make a fuel/water can rack for each side so these can be a way to secure them. Can get 4 cans on the left side and 3 on the right. The tie downs are rated for 400#, so might hold down at least my lunch box.
