Tool Sizes- Sockets and Wrenches

Ok so I searched all day today an only found a handful of "opinions" on socket sizes and wrenches for the deuce. Some of the threads that had pictures at one time do not work now or the links are no good at all for the depot master mechinc sets.

im getting a tool set together to keep in my deuce at all times for wheelin and to help buddies out with smaller civilian trucks.

is there any need for 1 1/4" + size wrenches on the deuce? I did pick up a 3/4" jumbo set from harbor frieght mostly for changing tires and to have a decent size socket set, but is there a need for the bigger sockets? What about wrenches? I'm going to get wrenches from tractor supply (cause I'm kinda OCD about matching things) and I can get wrenches from 1/4" all the way up to 2 3/4" I believe.

now I will be getting a double set of wrenches from 1/4" to 1 1/4" and obviously the bigger ones I only need one with a companion 18" adjustable.

What at is your take in this? I will be bobbing my deuce so all the stock suspension in the rear will be getting scrapped.

I have a 3/8 and 3/4 inch socket sets and wrenches up to 1" and a big crescent wrench.

The fact is, The BII tools are what you need. Anything else is a matter of opinion.

Some of the exist threads are years old and I have tried this before and no one replied or reply as do you know how old this thread? Also some of those threads don't exist anymore. That's why I'm posting a end thread.

Hndrsonjr does only having up to 1" cover most of the tools?

A good 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" socket set along with accompanying wrenches, screwdriver's, pliers, and a fitall wrench will get you far. You also need a bud nut socket for the lugs and thimbles and a 3" eight sided socket for removing axle nuts. I usually keep all of that plus some sort of bench stock in the truck such as a few wheel cylinders, DOT 5 brake fluid, some grease and some axle seals whenever I travel. Overkill for sure but I could do a wheel cylinder or axle seal on the side of the road and just about anything else if needed. It's a new year so my truck is now 43 years old. The only thing I don't take on the road is my torque wrenches. They don't like the constant vibration and tossing around from what I've been told by the guy that calibrates them.

Yeah for sure on the 8pt axle nut socket, and I have tire tools I did that stuff for 13 yrs so I have hammers irons and sockets. Also plan on keeping fluids and extra filters too. I was just curious on socket and wrench sizes.

Many years ago, I purchased a mechanics tool set from Home Depot for $180. It has been the perfect deuce tool set. The wrenches only go up to 5/8(my opinion is they should go up to inch and an eighth), but the sockets go up to inch and an eighth. You will need larger sockets for the lug nuts and hub nuts, but not much else. In the end, I bought another wrench set that goes up to 1" and life with the husky mechanics set along with the wrenches up to 1" have done real well for me.

Thank you gimpy that is exactly what I was looking for, well not the husky tool kit but it answered my question! I have a decent set of tools at home and a second set that is even bigger at work. But I wasn't sure about sizes of bolts and nuts on the deuce.

My my dece is gonna be the ultimate (or try to be) recovery/offroad truck. I'd like to almost do any repair besides a engine swap or similar out of the truck. I plan on having a decent size tool set in the truck along with co2 tank or a air compressor ran off the pto, torches, welder, stuff like that. Basically want to be able to be self sustainable for almost all repairs on the truck or any other truck or 4x4 to make it home.

I know a thing about Gimpy's tool set and his girlfriend. I'm not sure which he would miss more if they were gone.

LT. D, I doubt you would need over 15/16 for most stuff on a deuce. Even at that most maint. stuff is 5/16-9/16.

You'd also be surprised at how much you can strip from a deuce when you only have a Gerber multi-tool with you!

I (also) carry air impact (type) sockets up to 1 5/16 in 3 drive types up to 1". Full wrench set. 3/8 up 1 5/16. fuel filters oil filters. brake fluid. 1" (and 1/2") drive air impact guns. (run from the rear glad hand).

You can not over kill on what tools you carry, DEFINE the MISSON for the truck, then build the truck for that mission, and REMBEMBER, it is better TO HAVE and NOT NEED then TO NEED and NOT HAVE.

How's the 1" gun work on the deuce air supply? Like I said I ran 24/7 road service doing tractor trailer tires and heavy equipment for years and we had air compressors that ran off hydraulic pumps and they worked excellent. I was only going to get a 3/4" air gun

The deuce air supply would struggle with a 1" impact. I think the system is only capable of approximately 7 cfm. The air tanks are also pretty small. Only a few gallons each. You may could run a 3/4" impact in very short bursts with lots of waiting for the system to recharge.

3/4" impact works fine on a Deuces air. When I changed tires, I pulled hand throttle out to about 1500 RPM while running the impact and I had plenty of air. Use 3/8" air hose from the emergency glad hand on the rear.

Instead of removing the glad hands you might want to adapt them instead.

I run the 1 inch impact from the glad hand for lug nuts and it works well.
