I have actually considered doing that and using coil springs on the axles instead of leafs. Just a consideration that will probably never be followed through.
I wouldn't mind coming along for that trip, haha. I have a buddy in Amelia I've been meaning to visit. I think he's spotted your truck around, he's asked me if I know anyone with green iron up there. You're one of a few though, I'll give a hollar when I'm in the area.
I have considered doing this, but my modifications would go a little further than just the bed. I have been considering moving the rear/rear axle back as well and moving the bed back about a foot. I have considered setting up each rear like they would be on a bobber, but keeping the dual...
I have thought about going with a 7.3 IDI, a friend of mine has one in his Ford F350. While not as great as a Cummins would be, I could probably get the entire engine and transmission for 1/3 of the cost.

The regular socket fits...

If the middle axle is just slid a little sideways, parallel to the rear axle, I would assume that it's normal because of the scrub (right term?) when turning.
I just went through all of this and wish I would have replaced the seal when I did my clutch job. I did the clutch, then the main started leaking, so I had to drop the transmission again.
The flywheel is in the neighborhood of 80lbs, I would agree.
