honestly i've never seen a set of spyder gears wear out, only fail from overloading. shock loading from spinning one tire on slick surfaces then having it grab, etc.
with zero load on the gears i would expect the only type of failure possible to be from overspeed on the bearing surfaces, that...
so now you are talking about feedback from sharp turns. nothing to do with longevity or fuel economy.
I can see how lockouts could be beneficial for UJ axles in that condition, but most driving is not at full lock and when it is you will be going slow. seems like a non-issue to me.
spinning the spider gears under no load has much less friction than the ring gear spinning the pinion and the drive shaft up to the transfer case.
the scenario portrayed was the latter and will have noticable drag

if you plan to run alchohal you also have to consider material compatabilty like an e85 compatible high pressure fuel pump
a walbro high pressure pump could possibly handle it

also one picture showing a surprise... 32 count of 1/2 oz lead wheel weights. it was only on one of the fmtv wheels. I've never seen a strip of weights on a military wheel this size...
I did forget to factor in the case hardening but without testing it is an unknown quantity. If anyone has a bolt handy the head markings should indicate its grade.
testing a stock bolt is really the only way to solve this.
why do engineers ever spec out less than the best possible. cost. what is in there has lasted quite well for the most part. so cost vs life cycle their choice was a success.
getting the right clamping force definately is not an issue with higher grade bolts or ARP bolts grade 9 and up would...
