So I continue on my big reseal project. I have learned much on the journey...LOL.
I'm sure many of you have done this kind of work before but for me it's been many years since I have decided to take on such a task. They always seem so easy in my head...LOL.
It's nice to have friends that work...
You can use that damper....You just have to use a spacer between the damper and the crankshaft timing chain gear.
The later model dampers have a shorter snout as they were designed to be used on engines that have a crank trigger that sits in front of the crankshaft timing gear.
You can...
Should the key be adjusted for fit by lightly sanding it on emery cloth on a flat sheet of glass or just leave it alone?
It does sit in the middle of the key slot.
What should I hammer it in with? I don't want to mark up the new woodruff key.
OK...I'm starting to calm down after my crankshaft woodruff key nightmare today.
Onward to finish the project...
So...just how tightly should the new key fit and what is the best way to install the new one...NOT damaging it...so that it sits flush?
I assume the keys are installed dry?
I...
Please alleviate my paranoia...had a *ell day...
So I had a really difficult and frustrating situation develop today during my big reseal extravaganza...
Everything started off great. Damper came right off last night. No problems getting water pump as well as the timing cover off.
I have no...
Found the clips and have the O-rings....:)
Studs are out of the water pump fan flange...!
Wish me luck...!
It appears a new rear seal will be in order soon...Oh well...LOL.
All ready done....:D She was a diesel mechanic in the Navy. She's so tiny...they loved her because she could climb into the engine bays and do work...LOL.
My girlfriend picked this up for me when she heard me talking about all the work I was going to be doing.
It's a Kent-Moore J-22102 Seal installer / timing cover aligner whatever that means. She picked up a used one that is basically new for next to nothing so why not?...:) I love tools...
I'm not so worried about the water pump. That looks very straightforward. It's getting the timing cover off that looks like it's gonna be a bit nasty...:(
So I started the big tear down today. I have set aside a few days to do the work. I will be fixing some leaks as well as replacing the water pump and installing a new Fluidyne damper. The radiator will hopefully get re-cored if possible. If it can't be re-cored then I will have to bite the...
Thanks doghead...:)
I found my old Chilton manual and the torque specs coincide for the most part. IP gears, mounting the pump etc.
On the camshaft bolt the Chilton manual says 65ft/lbs. / 88nm so the TM lists the camshaft timing sprocket bolt at 10 ft/lbs. more....not sure why...
Is there...
Doghead....I think you misunderstood. I know the damper/crankshaft bolt is 200ft/lbs. and I do have a new one for that.
I'm talking about the bolt that goes thru the lower IP gear and camshaft timing sprocket into the Camshaft.....
as well as the 3 bolts that mount the upper IP gear to the...
doghead thanks for the reply...
I'm not sure that I will even need to do the gears yet. I'm just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start the tear down today. If the timing chain in within spec I probably won't touch it.
I would be using a installer kit with bearing, washer etc. I'm...
I did "verify that". That is why I'm asking the question. That torque spec is from the TM. And where in the TM does it actually say to replace the bolt? I could not find it?
I know what general torque specs are for metric bolts as I have been working with titanium hardware and anti-seize for...
Is it OK to re-use the timing sprocket bolt that goes thru the IP gear and timing sprocket into the camshaft?
I picked a new one up at GM for a possible timing gear swap but after checking the bolt it was determined that it's Chinese made...
I got a new washer as well which is US made but...
I will be installing the Fluidampr...:)
I did get a couple of new keys from GM. I used the part number from the TM for it. Where they were made who knows but I have them just in case.
I was pretty pissed today when I went to my GM dealer I buy my parts from to pick up the new water pump.
It...
Crankshaft key replacement with balancer swap?
Hey all,
So I'm getting ready to pull the timing cover off this weekend to fix a coolant leak as well as replace the water pump and the harmonic balancer.
What seems to be the guideline on replacing the key on the crank?
Does the key need to be...
When I drove my M1009 home the first time after purchase I parked it in front of the garage...reached up to grab the relay and do the mod and the factory relay fell apart in my hand...
Do it...!
