CUCV vs excursion, F350, or other pick up for bug out and snow vehicle.

In the pickup, it is because the gearing is so low without an overdrive. I have routinely run my 1009 at 70-80 with no problems other than lower fuel mileage. Because it is normally aspirated and designed for fuel mileage, not power. Nothing. It is a 1980s Chevy truck, it doesn't have the...

    M1008 14 bolt upgrade??

The 1008 and the aforementioned 3+3 dually should have the same 1ton perch spacing. I know the pros/cons of the 14B/D70 argument, I'm looking to build a CUCV wrecker for moving my junk around, not a mud truck/rock buggy. I want the proper dually width more than anything with the swap. 4.10s...

    M1008 14 bolt upgrade??

I'd love to have it at $200 for my 1008 so I can convert to Dually, but shipping from Ga to Co would be a b!#&h... Later, Joe

    Gasser's CUCV Car lot

Zombie thread alert..... But for the fuel filter assembly go to: Chevrolet Car Parts Surplus and search for "military". The Filter is about halfway down the page. Later, Joe

Cant read the wiring diagram, should be simple right??

No, they should not be energized all the time... that will burn them out. The controller card tells them when to kick off by removing the ground signal from the light blue wire. Part of the circuit on the card is a timer that turns off the glow plugs after a preset amount of time. If the relay...

M 1031 Farm Contact Service Truck

That's a really nicely setup 1031, can you provide some kind of list as to what you have on board? Speaking of which, does anyone know what's "officially" supposed to be in the bins of a SECM truck or where I can find a list? Later, Joe

Finally running again! But not shifting quite right

But if the rubber hoses are shot then it should shift harder, not softer because it's not getting enough vacuum. Later, Joe

Cant read the wiring diagram, should be simple right??

Electricity is not that difficult, think of it like water and the wiring diagrams like road maps and you'll do fine. Wiring the plow lights won't be very hard, I will recommend that as with all wiring jobs, you take your time and lay out the wires and spend time making it a clean installation...

Finally running again! But not shifting quite right

If it is not smoking and/or acting too different from before, I would say no. If you want piece of mind that it's right, you can get it timed. Later, Joe

Cant read the wiring diagram, should be simple right??

Ok, do you have 12V on the pink/black wire for the glow plug relay? If not, you can test the relay by putting 12V to that post and then grounding the light blue post. There is a plug under the dash near the column that must be plugged in to supply the card with 12V from the ignition. It is a 6...

Finally running again! But not shifting quite right

The vacuum pump only produces vacuum, it isn't 'timed'. It is most likely the vacuum valve on the side of the pump, loosen the two screws and move it around a little and then test drive, repeat until the shifting is where you want it. I would say you've got it too far advanced towards the front...

    Gen 2 and Voltmeter relays

Yes, that is an empty glow plug module socket. The starter relay can be replaced by going back to Checker and getting a heater blower relay for a 78 Chevy pickup with AC. Then it will start with the key. Otherwise, you are correct, a starter button mod will allow the starter to crank anytime...

    Gen 2 and Voltmeter relays

Hey TD, Welcome from another Colorado CUCV owner. For the relays, go to any parts house and ask for an Air Conditioning relay for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee. You might get one that has a tab on top to bolt the relay to something, but just snap it off or leave it. Makes no difference in operation...

Anyone know what this wire is for?

I just checked my 1009 and am certain that the wire is for the brake warning light and does go to that rubber connector, but it appears that the spade terminal on the rubber connector in the second pic is missing. It is supposed to be sticking up out of that slot in the top. Later, Joe

    M1009 Still Won't Start

Congrats on getting it running. I second the idea of blipping the throttle to get it charging. You can also check to make sure all the wires on the alternator are good and tight and clean. The knock is probably the cold advance changing the timing. It should go away once the truck is up to...

    M1009 Still Won't Start

Yes, both gen lights should be on with the key on but not running. If the volt meter is all the way to the left, then the batteries are low and probably not enough to start the truck. I'll bet once the batteries are good and charged, it'll fire right up. Later, Joe

    Mystery Plug

The glow plug cards are fairly long lived if you don't abuse them by ignoring dead glow plugs. The most common failure is when the glow plugs die, causing the resistor block to send too much power to the remaining glow plugs, burning them out in a cascading effect. If you ignore the problem...

    Mystery Plug

You can use a pushbutton or a momentary toggle switch. Just hold it up for 10-20 sec depending on how cold it is. Release it and start the truck. If it doesn't start, hold it a little longer next time. I don't recommend a regular toggle switch because if you forget and leave it on, you will...

    Mystery Plug

Yep, that would be an empty glow plug card slot. While you are waiting for a replacement, make a jumper switch by connecting a wire to the glow plug relay's small terminal with the light blue wire to a momentary switch connected to ground. Later, Joe
