    Good call, my bad.

    M1009 rear end replacement

What ratio do you want to use? For a 6.2 Blazer on stock size tires that doesn't need to haul anything heavy I would think around a 3.55 would be just about right. First thing I do when I get a used rear is to pull the cover anyway -- to visually inspect gear condition, see if there's a locker...

    tires/wheels

M1008's originally came with 235/85's, I'm pushing it with 265/75's on mine (supposed to be at least 7" width wheel, so M1008 stock wheels are 1/2" narrower than recommended minimum). Some people will run 285's on a stock 6.5' wheel, but I wouldn't do it . They will physically mount on the stock...

    Oil bath bearings?

The seals weren't designed for true oil bath so they wouldn't hold oil for long. I know a lot of guys who will thin out their grease by pouring some 90wt in it and giving it a stir. Works pretty well, especially in REALLY cold weather when hubs tend to stick if you just use straight grease...

    Weird Knocking Sounds

Have someone crank the steering wheel back and forth while you get underneath and check the tie rods and drag link for slop with the vehicle on the ground (Be safe, make sure it's on level ground, in park, with e-brake on) Are hubs locked or are they free? If it's only knocking in 4wd w/hubs...

    M1009 Re-Gearing...

Going rate around me seems to be about $650 to $900 per axle to swap gears within the same carrier break. Front axles are on the higher end of that figure. That's with brand new gears, new bearings, labor, all fluids and small parts, 90 day warranty. The cheapest guy I've seen advertises on...

    need starter soleniod

That's a bummer it's now an un-riggable (is that even a word?) part. Thanks for the info though.

    need starter soleniod

If it's an electrical failure, i.e. not making contact, there's a temp fix that applies to almost all GM starter solenoids. If you want to give it a try, here's how: Take the old solenoid cap off, unscrew the positive lug completely and you'll see it has a square base. Push the copper lug out...

    Portable diesel fuel/gas extractor.

As if I didn't have enough problems with meth addicts stealing stuff off my property  It was positively brilliant of you to help them all out by posting what amounts to a thinly disguised how-to article on fuel theft. "emergency situation" C'mon, you really expect me to believe that...

    Pulling a 105 trailer with M1008

M105 weighs about 2700 lbs empty. Mule weighs 870, + supplies weigh ? Figure 4k lbs to make it a nice even number. Most states require any trailer over 3000 lbs to have brakes (for good reason) so you're technically breaking the law. There's a few exceptions where the law states as low as...

Rear Diff Smells like a Sewer PLUS: ID these diff parts???

My 79 Blazer came stock with 3.08 geared 12 bolt. 12 bolt rears are not hard to find at all and it would be a little bit of an upgrade over a 10 bolt (1980-ish is when GM switched to 10 bolts in Blazers) Watch Cragslist and you will see people are selling 10 bolts for next to nothing - they are...

Rear shaft out of tailpiece - how much?

The alternate (preferred IMO) fix for this problem is to install a slip yoke eliminator kit/fixed yoke conversion and have a new driveshaft made. The new driveshaft will be a splined coupling style negating the need for a slip yoke at the T-case. It's a more expensive way to go, but it has...

    m1028a1 front end jump

What you describe is exactly what a tire with a broken belt will act like. Jack up fronting wheel and look for splits and/or unusual bulges. Check everything else for play (king pins, w 8heel bearings, tie rods etc) while the front end is on jack stands.

    Front axle replacement fun!

Total cost is pretty affordable - two tubs of wheel bearing grease, a couple bottles of gear oil, and a tube of RTV silicone. You're only going to learn to work on these things one way - by working on 'em. One hour is how long it would take me (working with air tools, experienced mechanic) so...

    Front axle replacement fun!

Why would you want to take a chance when it's a one hour job to swap out spindles and you have two axles for parts? It's your truck you might as well take the time to fix it right.

    Front axle replacement fun!

There's a rough and dirty method where you count the turns on the nut but it's a little too late for that. Since you are using a different yoke I doubt it would be any more accurate than guessing pinion preload anyway. If the old 10 bolt with the destroyed spindle is still more or less in one...

    Front axle replacement fun!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you just opened a can of worms by taking that yoke off. 10 bolts use a crush sleeve for pinion preload and it's a one shot deal on final torque. It's not a simple remove one yoke, and put a different yoke on type deal, because there's no way to change it...

Who made this tool? (Alternator belt tensioning doodad)

Lisle 12400 it is! Thanks 1833 :D If you ever have to do a driver's side alt on a 1031, it's worth the 6 bucks.

    Stupid goof- oil overfil

No Problem, the Army knew you were going to do that and they were thinking ahead! They put a conveniently placed valve under the hood to let you empty out that extra 1/2 quart neatly into a container. It's cleverly disguised and called an "oil sampling valve" or something, but now you know...
