    16 inch rim for m1009

Factory wheel width of 6.5" is usually your limiting factor, not tire clearance. Even 265's technically call for a 7" min width. 265 is where I draw the line. I won't run 285's on a stock steel wheel - they don't wear right or handle well unless you mount them on an 8" width wheel. How big a...

Who made this tool? (Alternator belt tensioning doodad)

Last week I had to tighten the belts on my 1031. As most of you probably know, The usual work-around of sticking a bar through the hole in the alternator bracket doesn't work too well on CUCV's. On 1031's in particular, it's darn near impossible to do with the usual pry bar method. On the...

    Why are there 2 batteries?

Twice the volts means 1/2 the amps necessary for the same power - Ohms law. For something like a light bulb it doesn't really matter, but For high amp draw loads like starters 24v is a much better deal. Starters require a *lot* of amps. Practical example: A 24v winch will draw approximately...

Wow I can break the speed limit now!

Powr-lok is the plan. Tightest LSD out there shy of a full locker and I love 'em. I don't use 4x on pavement so it shouldn't be a problem. Trac-loks (Crack-loks) are weak sauce, so I figure I'll upgrade while I'm in there.

Wow I can break the speed limit now!

No worries -I'm fully aware. As long as I don't put it in 4wd with the hubs locked it'll be fine. The front 60 takes more time to set up gears in and requires a few special tools and parts that I don't have yet. I'll be 2wd only for the next few weeks until I have all the parts on hand. I don't...

Wow I can break the speed limit now!

Swapped the 4.56 gears in the rear for 3.73's today just to see if that's the best ratio for how I use the truck. Definite improvement so I'm going to match the front once I find a decent used set of D60 3.73's at the yard. Total cost so far is about $130. $99 for a complete used rear (gears...

    Wheel Bearing Woes

No idea what the Army calls it, but Dana/Spicer calls it a spindle lock washer. I have a couple for a Dana 60, but that won't help you, because 10 bolts use a smaller spindle. I'm 99% sure that a Dana 44 uses the same spindle hardware as a 10 bolt. So I looked up the kit for a 44. Dana 44...

Most ridiculous workaround ever, or a COOL idea? (Air conditioning)

As long it's not 105 degree wind, I'm happy.

Awesome, saves me a trip to the yard - Thanks Dan!

Most ridiculous workaround ever, or a COOL idea? (Air conditioning)

I considered taking apart a portable AC unit and seeing if I could convert the compresser and fan motors to 24v, but the newer 110v inverters are about 90%+ efficient and I can also use it to power other stuff when I don't feel like running the genny -- it has multiple uses other than powering...

Most ridiculous workaround ever, or a COOL idea? (Air conditioning)

A lot of the big rigs are going to "no idle" air conditioning units. It's a separate system that just provides AC, so you don't have to run the engine. Awesome setup, but they cost about 3 grand and are a little overkill for my needs. But it got me thinking... I have a 24v system and a total of...

    Trans help

Can't help you on that one. I've never gotten that deep into a 208 myself. Every 4x4 I've owned has had a 205.

    Parking Brake pedal question

There's supposed to be a piece of rubber there. I think it's the same part for all pickups and blazers 73-87. It's not a CUCV specific part. 2nd pic is normal position when released.

    Trans help

NP208's have little plastic pads on the shift fork. When they get worn out, the T-case will have issues with partial engagement and popping out of gear. Google image search "NP208 shift forks" it's a pretty common problem.

HELP!!! M1009 won't start AFTER replacing starter...

Fully charged batts should read 12.6 to 12.7 volts http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/battery%20diagnosis.pdf anything under 12.4 needs to be charged before you can even test it. The 12.2 is probably junk. I don't know how you got a 13.2v reading off one batt, unless...

Need a couple (late) m1031 specific pictures

Thanks NDT, that was *exactly* what I needed! I'll try to pay the favor forward the next time somebody needs a picture. Well, now I know why the governor sometimes won't kick in, and other times spools up just fine. That roller arm on my switch is all bent up. I'll have my helper (kid) play...

Need a couple (late) m1031 specific pictures

Hi all, Still working on getting my rig squared away. There's a couple contact maintenance truck-specific parts that have me scratching my head and I need to look at another M1031 to figure out. If somebody could snap a couple picture of these parts (or manage to find pictures from the TM) it...

    Where to find NOS starters

What's wrong with the one you have? As long as they haven't been totally fried by cranking them non-stop for 5 minutes, 95% of the time all they need is a new set of brushes and a solenoid rebuild/replace (contact lug on solenoid + post is usually 1st thing that wears out - open one up and...
