    Tire talk

I've switched to Nitto Ridge Grapplers and have been happy with them a few thousand miles in. Much better on-road performance, lower noise and much less vibration than the stock wheels and tires. I did have to do an aftermarket wheel.

Geared hub drain plug removal advice

once you get it out you can replace with a square-headed plug from the hardware store. I am blanking on the thread size and pitch but it makes it much easier to do service in the future instead of a recessed allen style. I have an example of what I am talking about below.

    Humvee viscus fan conversion

Thanks. My question was how does the viscous clutch differ from the hydraulic one that comes stock in a M998? Does it no longer need the power steering pump and Cadillac valve? Does it engage progressively?

    Humvee viscus fan conversion

An ignorant question but how does it work compared to the stock M998 controller that just engages the fan on and off at a single temperature setpoint?

    brake shudder question

I've had my M998 for 4 years and the brakes have always shuddered once they heat up ever since the beginning. The pads have plenty of meat left on them, they do not drag as verified both by spinning them up on a lift and also driving for a few miles and slowing down without brakes and feeling...

FYI hmmwv centramatic I mentioned before.

Still have them. Part number 370-800

    M998 Turbo Upgrade - BMI Commander™ 6500 Turbo Kit

On hills and under load is where this kit makes a night and day difference. I've only taken it to a few thousand ft in elevation but even around town with the M1102 trailer it just handles the load so much better.

    Wheels and tires, aftermarket

I have these on my M998. I wish I could have gotten the 6mm offset but they were out for quite a while. They fit fine, just stick slightly outside the wheel well but its not an issue. A little bit of rain spray escape but not onto the windshield. I put 37" nitto ridge grapplers on them...

    Shaking above 65MPH

I have a set of centramatics from when I ran stock goodyears if interested. They were $300 and I'm selling them for $150 plus whatever shipping is at the post office. They had maybe 2000 miles on them and worked well before I decided to go to aftermarket wheels and tires.

    My ongoing restomod M998ish project

So a review so far of the 700r4 and BMI turbo. I've put a few thousand miles on the combo so far and love it. Driving to the beach and back 300 miles round trip mostly at 65 mph I was at 2200 rpm and got 14.1 mpg overall. If I would have gone a little slower I think I would have done better...

    wicked wheel and BMI turbo

I was curious if anybody has installed a wicked wheel setup for the BMI turbo and if any benefits would be seen at lower RPM. I've got the BMI kit installed on my 6.2 early this year and have been loving it, especially mated with the 700r4. The one gap I see for myself and maybe others with a...

    700R4 transmission in a HMMWV

One other comment is we left the bowtie supplying pressure gauge in place the first 250 miles snaking it through the hole in the firewall near the parking brake. Maybe leave that in for a while to make sure your pressures are looking good? Another thing we did was add a transmission temp...

    700R4 transmission in a HMMWV

I can offer that the guy in NC who did my installation has done a ton of hmmwvs and knows 700r4's inside and out (was a GM transmission mechanic for 20 yrs) and did a great job on the wiring and brake to TCC unlock setup. I've been very happy with how it functions and knock on wood I've put a...

    Diff ? and 6x6

There are some builds on youtube for example just from a quick google search. It would be a cool project, way over my head!

    M998 turbo conversion

Thanks for sharing the differences between the stock and aftermarket radiator. I was thinking of one of those but this makes me rethink that. My turbo is certainly different but I've not had temp issues at all even on hot days with a heavy load. The fan cycles on every few miles and on hills...

    Diff ? and 6x6

I'm guessing that a lot of people have the same idea I have in my mind which is "that sounds like an incredibly difficult and complex project." The diff ratios are sometimes but not always on a tag attached to the diff housing. One of mine had the tag and another did not. I am struggling...

    Transmission Upgrade on M998

Looking on their website it looks like its a 4L80E. If so, you will need more than a few changes correct? I'm thinking cross member change, drive shaft changes, electronic controller, etc. There are a list on the main HMMWV forum here on steel soldiers.

    M998 turbo conversion

Awesome, that has got to feel great. I am really pleased with where I am at with mine and I am not trying to drag race just make it a much more usable truck, which the overdrive and 10psi boost does very well. I don't want to start seeing what else can break if I push it to hard. BMI had me...

    M998 turbo conversion

Glad you found everything. I think your truck is awesome and from that other post with the manual wastegate I think you’re really close to it being perfect. These engines seem to need some air to wake up. The kit was around $4200 and has everything but I do need to reroute the exhaust this...
