    Wheel Covers / Rim Protectors

OK may be a silly question, but what are those teardrop shaped pieces for on the lug nuts? I have seen those on a couple semi's and wondered. Is it to denote left handed vs. right handed threads? Or maybe it gives you a visual indicator of a lug nut that has loosened up?

    special charger for AGM batteries?

Based on your recommendation I have hooked up a Noco Genius G7200. I'm only using one for maintenance. Within 30 minutes of hooking it up, mine showed solid green 100%, after the truck had sat for two weeks including temps in the 30's at night. On 24v it only puts out 3.6 amps but that seems...

    Full time 6x6 question

I *think* with the FMTV's it is just a function of the transfer case that handles this difference. I was actually thinking about this a couple days ago. It occurred to me that because of the weight on the front axle, the front tires squat more than the rear tires (truck unloaded), and I...

Will this towbar end work on a FMTV?

When you finally do win a truck and have a towbar, check the towbar foot to make sure it fits the front tow points correctly. On my truck it appears those brackets were an early casting, and for the regular medium tow bar feet to work, I need to grind down the front of the brackets on the...

    Lifting cab

Maybe you can unbolt the latch piece from the rear of the cab and use something to raise the cab?

    First First First

Oh, and despite the manual saying top speed is 55MPH, plan on doing 49-50mph just in case. 55MPH is pretty much wide open for these and mine wouldn't even do that because of a sticky throttle cable and repaired foot pedal support.

    First First First

Take an air compressor to air the tires up in case the CTIS isn't working. You can buy or make an adapter to use a gladhand with air hose to air the tires, but that is also dependent on the gladhands operating properly, and many of these have bad check valves that make them malfunction. I...

Denton NC MV & Surplus Show 14-16 April 2016

The trails vary in difficulty. There are a couple of them that you can do without any worry. I used to take my lifted suburban in there and do a couple of the easier trails and camp out overnight. The joke about Uwharrie is that the place "grows rocks". If you look at the trail map, I used...

    FMTV Small Arms Mount

I think the material you are talking about is Delrin.

    M1079 check those hubs!

It does. Luckily I think my truck had a recent service done before they sold it. Both front hubs have oil, and it is clean.

    FMTV Small Arms Mount

I have thought about this some too. Any rifle or shotgun with a decent length barrel is too long. Maybe just take the factory upper holders loose and use those mounting holes for a custom mount to hold a couple long guns in a horizontal position? I understand for safety reasons that may not...

    M1083 air brake issue question

no, sorry that sounded confusing. The tractor protection valve itself has one of those crimped on vent caps. It's the same style cap like is crimped on the front gladhand covers. On my truck I was losing air out of that vent cap when applying the brakes. It also helps isolate the air leaks...

    M1083 air brake issue question

If you want to check the tractor protection valve, before you take the whole thing off, I would check the one rubber diaphragm that is located closest to the crimped on vent cap. There are just 4 screws holding that plate on and you can do that without taking the valve off the truck. On my...

    LMTV Upgrades

On some of the early trucks the military applied some sort of sealant type stuff that kind of resembles roll-on bed liner. Mine had it applied to the whole floor. Underneath the driver's side storage box that sealant material is cracked and buckled. I can't tell whether the top layer of sheet...

    M1083 air brake issue question

Yeah those are the ones I was referring to in post #2. They are Haldex KN25060. The rebuild kit is Haldex RN11V. Not sure if that could be the issue, but I would recommend checking them either way as they all fail at some point. It's just a rubber diaphragm inside.

    fix loose rivet nuts

Looks like that model goes up to 1/4" size, not bad. The ones holding the antenna mount are 5/16 size. I may get an actual crimp tool one of these days, but at least there is an easy way without one. I didn't realize I had a problem with the ones on the cab until I tried to reinstall the...

    fix loose rivet nuts

I thought I would share this in case any of you find yourself fighting with loose rivet nuts. The military seems to use a lot of them for sheet metal. They are great until they lose their grip and spin when you try to tighten or loosen a bolt. I will also add that these things are very...

    M1083 air brake issue question

Have you checked the other 3 two-way check valves mounted behind the driver's side step? I'm just thinking of valves to check, and those aren't too bad to get to.

    LMTVs and Traffic Signal Actuators

Happens to me all the time. Now on the common routes I drive, if a passenger car is not already in the turning lane waiting, then I take a right instead and go a different way, when it's practical anyway. If there are double left turning lanes, I make sure to get in the lane with at least one...
