It almost is the submarine deuce from the 50's. Would be nice to see a recreation of that.
How long does/did it take to dry everything and clean it all out?
The canvas does not meet the bows all the way around, there is a small gap. That might be making you thing it does not fit.
Or you could have got one made for the dump versions.
Go one step more, find out how to volunteer to help out. I did a couple years, boy did I learn a LOT. I found if you really want to hear the more interesting stories, do the late night or even over night shifts.

There is no wait to start buzzer on a deuce, that I have ever seen. The buzzer you hear is the low air pressure warning. And the TM's for the deuce are under the resources tab above.
Reminds me of a story my father told me about one of his experiences in Vietnam.
He was an RTO and stayed beside the convoy commander, they got to a point where they had to ford a creek. the convoy commander had and M113 go across first to see if the rest of the convoy could cross.
