    General Checkout on HMMWV's

I took them both out, the 87 is a dog compared to the 09'. different transmissions I guess, I did the steepest hills I could find, no problem. It was the first time for me to drive one, Kinda hard to get in and drive if you're tall. I like the overdrive. The underbody on the 09' was clean...

    General Checkout on HMMWV's

The Tan one is the 09'. Both are in nice shape and appear to be low mileage.

Holy Cow, Thanks guys!, I'm a 5 ton guy, and these things have stuff so packed together they look like a mess.

    General Checkout on HMMWV's

I took delivery today of two slant back units for the local sheriff's dept to check out before they use them. They both have 600 some miles on the odometer, very nice shape, one an 87 model with V-belts, one an 09' model with the serpentine belt. Both are set up for the .50 and have nice ring...

    Allison Transmission

Is that a 923A2? I didn't know 923's had pushbutton mode controlled transmissions. I thought they all had the old T-shifter.

    Allison Transmission

It could be the modulator on the left side of the trans. Mine shifts 1, 1/2, 1/2/3, 1/2/3/4 thru 1,2,3,4,5. The modulators stick sometimes if they've been sitting a long time. Whenever I drive mine, I run it thru all gears, 1 thru 5 starting with 1st, just to work everything. The biggest...

    Allison Transmission

I have like 53 big palms, maybe I should try that!,, Surely my wife wouldn't miss one:) I did pull out a buried humvee the other day after some desert swamping after a rain, but that was pretty anticlimatic. For all around driving, I sure like the 923. It's like driving a car compared to the...

    Allison Transmission

Just got back from KS and spent some time with an ag operator that runs the same tranny as the 900 series trucks in big 3500 gallon spray rigs. He's running C4, and said he has 6400 hours of hard pulling on one of his 120 foot liquid sprayers without a hitch, just changes the fluid and filters...

    WC54 my first WW11 Dodge

That's a great find, and a great piece for restoration. My first MV was a 41 WC with a frozen motor. I put a 270 Dodge HEMI out of a 56' dodge car in it. That truck would throw axles every which direction. The install was beautiful and looked like stock. Those ND tires would roost some...

    Oil Leak and pressure question.

This is probably going to be an on-going issue as these 900 series start coming home from sitting so long. Might be a good idea to post the seal number and the speedy sleeve info as soon as someone gets further into it. I looked at a bunch of M936's online from Camp Shelby, and they are all...

    NHC-250 Engine Troubles

An awfully expensive reminder to carry a flashlight, I must admit. We had several of these engines in our Versatile farm tractors on the farm in KS, and they were bulletproof. They'd go 7500 hours before they ever needed work, and that was pulling at full load and 2100 rpm all day.

    NHC-250 Engine Troubles

I agree, it was a pretty stupid deal. I think the block had a cold leak and the coolant had drained down over time sitting. It was dark when he was driving it so he couldn't see the gages too well. A crate motor is on the way, sounds like the best idea at the moment.

    NHC-250 Engine Troubles

My Buddy drove off in a 923, and didn't do a good check of the fluids. It got hot, discolored the paint pretty bad on the heads and down a couple inches on the top of the block. I got it started later, there's coolant in the engine oil, it makes quite a bit of white smoke, has a dead miss on...

    Water pump question

Depending on age and condition, the heat exchanger, or oil cooler for the transmission oil can develop a leak, and transfer small amounts of transmission oil into the coolant, or vice versa. Antifreeze wrecks Allison transmissions.

    Water pump question

Check the oil in the tranny and see if it's contaminated. if it is you're gonna have a bad tranny soon.

    New, new M923A1 Pics

Thanks Karl, I'm amazed myself. It doesn't even have dirt on it. They must have kept it in the 923 showroom or something..

    Allison Transmission Fluid Research

I delved into the Allison manuals today and came up with some basic info for all Allison Automatic Tranny users. The earlier 1990's Allison manuals say that Dexron III is suitable for "On Highway" The suggestion is made for C-4 fluid for "Off Highway" C-4 #30 Weight is suggested for "Severe...

    M923a1 transmission fluid?

The Axles and X-fer case is 80/90, The military used #10wt engine oil, not 15/40. If you go to the Allison Website, they call out TES-295 oil, which is synthetic, and made for that tranny. I couldn't find Dex III mentioned at all on the Allison site. #10 wt oil has very poor operating...

Comments on servicing my newly acquired M923

I was gonna say, GE makes all sorts of 24v bulbs, so skip the voltage converter idea, That's what I would do, or Like Beerslayer said the LEDs can handle all sorts of voltage. The diff between 12 & 24 is twice the volts, but half the amps, so no need to worry about any existing wiring issues...
