That winch does not look stock to me. The mount for the winch, how it connects and bolts to the work plate/accessory horns, does look Unimog-ish. But looking closely the winch is connected to the mount by smallish bolts in tension (not even in shear, straight tension), definitely not the MB...
Suggestions: When the voltage looks bouncy on the dash voltmeter, Grab an ANALOG meter of the old type and start checking the voltage stability at:
- the output of the alternator, both 12v and 24v terminals. If 'bouncy', is it one or both voltages?
- If bouncy on one or the other, suspect...
My 2c, an LMTV would be the last vehicle I would try to run chains on due to all the air lines in harms way of a loose chain. But, you didn't say what vehicle the tires were on!
Fleetguard/Cummins makes an Asphaltene conditioner for Diesel fuel. I use it in the Unimogs which recirculate the fuel past the hot engine and back to the tank (the heat from which precipitates out more asphaltene).
I concur with Suprman, the torque loss is not noticeable at all. The Allison transmission totally compensates for the ratio by selecting correct gear, plus the 3.07 really does seem to match the engine torque curve better at the achieved higher speeds.
I drive two M1078 trucks regularly. One...
That's the Over Pressure Valve and the adjustment screw is not too far off from "normal" with 6 or 7 threads showing, best I can tell. 8 or 10 threads is typical. Screwed in more, as it is, puts more pressure on the diaphragm and should increase the "pass" pressure, possibly to a pressure...
Thanks for the prices.
The old finned dryer/filters obviously should not have water in them. They weren't purging. The liquid stuff should be blown out every purge, and that should happen when the compressor governor cycles. Rebuild needed.
Just cleaning requires taking the 6 bottom bolts...
In defense of the original dryers, they work. You just have to service them. Some of our trucks are 25 years old or more and probably have not had the air dryer serviced but a few times in their lives. Once we new owners actually service them, they are good for a long time.
Being coalescing...
Specifics might be better than a poll. Checked out my driveshafts, found 2 of 4 u-joints with a little side play, replaced same. That made a noticeable difference in shaft vibes. Measured hinging angles: one was 7 thou, one 11 thou, with 20 thou (if I recall) permitted. Called it good...
Yep, we gave it a serious try a couple of years in a row. Report is here:
https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?53275-Commo-Gear-for-the-GA-Rally
The last entry (number 77) is a summary but the whole thread would be good background info to see the "plan".
Activity sort of sputtered to...
Found the specs of a Case 580 backhoe here:
http://d3is8fue1tbsks.cloudfront.net/PDF/Case/Case%20580L%20v1995.pdf
Second page, bottom right, "backhoe lift capabilities". Nowhere near 10k lbs and unable to do the job you need. The only item near 10k was breakout torque (in ft Lbs) for the...
One of the bags on my 1078 was also frayed and starting to delaminate from constant flexing. An air test showed little soap bubbles. With no replacement bag available I squirted "Slime" tire sealant in it. Worked fine and still holding several months later. This is not permanent of course...
That's a good link, thanks!
There seems to be a mistake in step 2, should be remove nut 4 (not nut 2).
And why do they say to torque the nut twice, before then after whacking the tool with a hammer? Of course we won't have that tool.
MP, You may have found all the drain plugs. I really do not know the transmission setup in the SEE mogs but a typical 406 mog transmission of that era has three drains, two on the transmission and one in the cascade case ahead of the transmission, plus the one in the clutch/bell housing. Guess...
