My dash gauge reads low too, at the bottom edge of green. Check actual charging voltage at any convenient point and you may find the charge voltage is fine. Mine was over 28 volts.
I also enjoy watching your progress, Justin. Thanks for the time to write it up. Seeing the star on the door of that truck reminds me, do all FMTVs have the small star on front center above grill? Does it signify anything?
thanks,
Bob
Find the source of that Diesel leak. If Diesel can leak out, air can leak in, and that can kill the engine when it's running and drawing fuel under vacuum. You might find something as simple as a loose fuel line fitting letting air in.
Blackmagic, there will be a "D" stamped on the bottom area of your data plate. That D indicated the driveshaft mod.
BTY guys, my M-1078 also has a "C" stamped just before the "D". Any idea what that mod might be?

Does your odometer read wrong too, in the same direction? I ask because my speedo reads way too low, about 5\8 of correct consistently, but the odometer reads just a little too high (slightly too many miles). I'm thinking if the odometer is close but the speedo is way off, and the speedometer...
Creekjumper, Here is a quick summary. If you need a backhoe and loader the FLU-419 SEE is a good tool as-is. The hydraulic tools are terrific, too, but you'll seldom find them with the SEE. Yes, forks were made for the Schmidt loader but good luck finding them. I have never seen a set. The...
My LMTV behaved like Suprman said, would not return to low idle without assist (toe under skinny pedal). The absolute 'stop' for low idle is a bolt adjustment on the top front left of the engine area. I idled my engine down so transmission shift into 2nd was not so abrupt. Also the truck...
That triangular hole is probably just the drain hole for the cover and rust is minor. Nothing to worry about....unless the engine oil shown in the next picture is implied to have come out of that hole (joke) .

This thread ended in 2008 but contains some excellent information on the early history of the FMTV and early prototypes. Hope other FMTV enthusiasts fine it as informative as I did.
BobS are you still around?
My 1994 LMTV does something similar. Same quiet operation as long as there is a little acceleration, then a rattle noise when speed is reached and coast is achieved. just a little more fuel applied and the noise goes away again. I am estimating worst speed is about 40 mph. At higher speeds...
Do you want to operate Ham HF? VHF? Want to transmit as well as receive? There are threads by the dozens here on SS, but quickly:
AS-1729 with MX-6707 base and two section whip: Operates 30 MHz to 80 MHz. Will work quite well for 6 m Amateur band and not so well on 10m (which is outside...
Hi Phill, try checking with any of the Unimog vendors who part out Unimog 406 or 416 models. The parking brake handle assembly is probably the same as the 419.
Vonsmog.com comes to mind.
The little cy!inder is easy to service right on the truck and with the cab down and locked. In fact, that seems to be the safe way to do it. The big hex on the cap of the little cylinder is 1-1\2 inch I recall. Just unscrew it, remove the cap, use the shaft end to wiggle the piston to pull it...
Looked to me that the driver was trying to brake the tracks against power (torque converter power shift transmission?). Coasting off would have been better. Kinda like trying to drive on snow with automatic transmission and idle set too high. Vehicle trying to go and stop at same time.
Looks like an AS-3900 with a serious hair cut. The heatshrink below the 'bulb' does not look original. The base might still have a tag on it, up under the bottom. Is there a BNC connector or has the base been modified too?
Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I was a little speculative of poor procedures in my post. It's always better to have the sample test compared to not having it.
thanks,
