    24 Volt battery????????

Hi Joe, Thanks for that info. I bought four used batteries of that size, not Gill brand, and none of them were usable, so beware. These are starting batteries, designed for high current for a few seconds, then recharge at high current but from a voltage regulated source, just like a vehicle...

    24 Volt battery????????

Joediveguy, did you find out what type batteries those are? If they are so plentiful and cheap they may be the NiCad type. These are being phased out in favor of AGM and other types. Lots of places will beg you to take the NiCads (with a signature that you will dispose of them properly)...

Ham Radio Operators / Steel Soldiers

I wholeheartedly second that motion, Joe. A PRC-320 is a lot of radio for the money. Many are available right now for decent prices, but this opportunity will not last. Get a 'tested and guaranteed' one if you can. Since they come from Great Britain, shipping is a killer if you have to swap...

    CB Antenna Website

Bet your electro-drive M-38 uses SCRs controlled by PWM speed controller. (silicon controlled rectifiers, pulse-width-modulation). That's a tough system to operate a radio around. I found that out when working offshore and trying to play ham radio on the platform while they tripped the hole...

Anyone use their 6.2 diesel with a power inverter for camping?

One source for 24v inverters is finding an old UPS (uninterruptable power supply) that ran on 24v. These commonly get thrown out when the batteries go dead. Hook it up to your truck's 24v source instead of internal batteries. Don't plug in the 115 AV input and you have an inverter. With...

    Oil Sampling and analasys.

I've used Blackstone Labs for about 10 years. Probably cut my oil changes to 2/3 what I used to do. At 4 gallons per oil change, that adds up. IMHO money well spent. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

Why is taking 12v from one batt bad?

That's what I do in the Unimog U1300 and 404 Radio truck. Some converters can be connected directly to the battery but most can't. Two reasons: the current from the battery will flow backwards into the converter when the converter is off, and second, if there is a direct connection to a dead...

    24 volt system charging

Even simpler, if your charger does not ground its negative (most don't), or you don't set the charger on the truck, you don't have to disconnect the link. Jump starting from a 12 v vehicle works the same way, topping up one battery at a time, or two 12v vehicles, one for each battery.

    An Amusing Unimog quote...

".. just barely strong enough. Thats true for the hole (sic) vehicle..." " really surprises me too. Typical American 'lack of maintenance then throw it away' is what kills most Unimogs. Also, "If you turn up the engine for just a few horses, you will get transmission problems." is one of...

Israeli Defense Force Paint Color Late '60s

FYI, about 10 years ago I panted a truck desert sand color with Home Depot mixed paint. Now it's sort of pink.

GA 2011 Rally After Action Report

It's too easy to show up at our SS area, spend the weekend, and never go over to the office. Obviously there is a lack of knowledge of proper procedure for paying Durhamtown. Undoubtedly most failures to pay (and sign waiver) were done innocently. Mike might consider a sign at the entrance...

    weasel in the deep

Hmmm, Norway, ice, thick ice, the weasel probably fell through ICE to get into the lake. Use that ICE to advantage. During warm(er) weather, rig the weasel with cables. Then in mid-winter when the ice is best, use beams and jacks to lift the weasel out of the muck (ice holds up a lot of...

    2011 GA Rally Radio Comms

You would have enjoyed the ham radio for sure. Adam, Joe and I were checking out the PRC-320 so they could take it on the trail, and a Swedish ham dropped in on frequency. We chatted with him on the little whip antenna, the PRC-320 manpack, battery powered. "It don't get much better than...

    GA Rally participants check in

Miss Kitty and I rolled in about 1730 Sunday evening. Had an uneventful road trip, just longer than we like. Big red 'mog liked the highway run at 55 to 60 mph and rewarded us with 13.8 mpg going down pulling empty M-105, and 11.6 coming home with 9 big tires and lots of other goodies from the...

Ham Radio Operators / Steel Soldiers

I think we should keep Hightechken away from our green radios!:-x Sure the '246 and others can be used on the ham bands they cover (by a ham). Their 50kHz steps don't coincide with some desirable frequencies, like 52.525 national simplex freq, but for talking to other green radios or the...

    2011 GA Rally Buy/Sell/Trade Thread

Hooked up my M-105A2 trailer today for the trip down Thursday and the air brake diaphragm is busted. Anybody got one? Also need a spare wheel for the M-105, with tire would be a bonus. Not having any big trucks other than Unimogs I am dummy about these wheels. Are these multi-piece trailer...

    2011 GA Rally Radio Comms

Just a reminder that any hams who are joining us at Durhamtown are welcome and encouraged to help out with radio links. Non-hams who have green radios can also help, even on the ham bands, if you are participating along with a licensed ham. If you can assist, please post your plans and...
