I opened the turbo to clean the oil inside and in the process the 3-bolt inlet gasket peeled off.
It is about 61mm/2.4" ID and 80mm/ 3.15" center-to-center between the 3 bolts:
There is no info in the TM and I looked around for an equivalent gasket, but most stores don't know the dimensions...
What is the smaller rectangular opening next to the bolt for? I understand that the other four (only three shown in this picture) provide the cylinders with air, what is the function of the fifth one?
Your paint jobs always look phenomenal!
What size CFM/HP/GAL/PSI compressor do you use on the HVLP gun? (I know it’s your experience and not the compressor :)
I saw those door’s before painting and the surface is a little grainy, not exactly flat, like the OEM X-doors. Did you have to do any surface preping to smooth it out or left it like it was delivered?
How does it look closer?
I am so sorry to hear about your troubles, I have much smaller issues and it’s painful, I can only imagine your pain. On the positive side once it’s fixed you can enjoy the truck without worries, if it was going to fail, it’s better that it happened closer to your house than on some road trip.
On a similar subject of figuring out the engine condition, I read that you have a borescope (I have one a 6mm), besides going thru the glow plugs, are there other areas I should look at if my blow-by doesn’t improve?
I typed too soon asking about the two side brackets/ blast shields on the cargo door, since they are not installed and presume you will re-install it with the top armor piece.
Are you planning to paint other parts of the body also?
Any pointers on how you mask the parts you don't to over-spray...
So it's no accident that it turned out so good.
Did yours have the armor holes around the fenders and rockers? If it did, how did you fill those? (maybe used the same Bondo type filler or something different?)
I felt so inspired by how great your truck came out that I ordered the CARC paint (which I have been delaying because it does have a limited shelf life) and I look forward to paint :) Thanks for sharing the great work!
How about the heat coming from the oil fill port via the cdr valve? I presume with that much oil present in the turbo there must be even more hot air. And even if there is no oil, there would still be the hotter air which would increase the intake air temperature?
Additionally, I presume the...
That info it’s a huge time saver as I am not looking to reinvent the wheel and yes, clearly DMAX is the way to go, which I would do on another truck.
I was hoping to maybe get around 250+ HP without pulling the engine to do arp studs and all that.
Couldn’t I get there by just increasing the fuel...
I am glad you said that because that’s one of the questions, what turbo would be required and would fit? HX40? Or? I think the intercooler requires at least an additional 4-5psi to be compensated for.
Also the intercooler would be the last step, maybe I don’t even have to do it as the...
You are 100% correct about the engine being a turd 😂 . I am just experimenting and don’t expect any huge gains, it’s a learning exercise and it’s relatively easy to modify. I plan to dyno it once it’s baseline operational and again after the mods to get some objective data points.
The one...
Yes, that’s the next step after I install the boost sensor. Actually I am putting together a basic data acquisition to capture boost, egt and maybe iat just to get my mind around the engine…I am thinking to add an intercooler and water-methanol injection combined with increased fuel supply, but...
I did cut the wastegate can, oiled it from both sides and cleaned the paint (from the rebuild ) of the arm. Now it’s moving smoothly being pulled by the spring where before it was totally stuck.
