Its not clear from your posting how far you are from the base - it seems five miles. If you actually just live five miles from the base - TODAY start reading all the manuals, beginning with brake maintenance. If it takes six ten minute drives to prep the truck for a safe drive - so what?
As...
Some say that the squeeky wheel gets the grease. At my shop, the squeeky wheel more often got replaced than greased.
Further - I once had my EUC turned down for "fraud". Seems they thought I lied about my address (post office serving my home was in a different county than the home itself, so...
RE: V-100 TM
Well, not all TMs (lost probably half my TM collection a few years ago, haven't rebuilt it yet) - but a number of reference books - and filing cabinets of documents. Two more cabinets and a book shelf are out of the view.
One of these days I'll be able to get a real desk, then...
RE: engine swap questions
Keep in mind that by design, the weak link in these trucks is the engine. In combat or tactical situations, it is far better to stall the engine than it is to snap a u-joint. Also, the trucks were designed for something over 70 percent of their lives to be...
As I contemplate work on a six-by - a question comes to mind.....
On more than one occassion I've longed for faster-stopping brakes on my bone-stock five-ton.
Anybody here made any mods to this system that resulted in reduced stopping distance?
Anyone added a dual-circuit system to a...
My data is not conclusive as to at what VIN the builders plates changed. Perhaps someone on the list with a truck whose VIN is close to you, AND that has the original data plate, will chime in.

To append what Rory has said - there is one more piece to the FS puzzle - that is, which FS standard is being referenced? FS 595, FS 595A , the current FS-595B, or the new standard to be released later this year/early next year?
Though in theory the colors represented by each number should be...
In my experience, the Aervoe fades out/changes colors in a year or so. The Gillespie Semi-Gloss grays and chalks in West Tennessee. In five years it is VERY noticeable. I've painted some with Forest Green as well, and was very unhappy, but don't remember if that was the "new formula" Aervoe...
RE: winch cable
I drove my truck down to the local crane and rigging place and bought new, which they installed. Don't remember the price, but it didn't seem unreasonable to me (especially given that just prior to this I'd watched the used wire rope that was on the 20000 lb front winch snap...
If I recall correctly (can't look at my research at this moment), the registration numbers were somewhere in the 4K_ _ _ 71 range when the plates changed from General Products Division to AM General. I am trying hard to nail this down, 'cause this will speak volumes as to when each truck was...
I strongly believe the last digit is incorrect. Out of several thousand deuces I've looked at, I've never seen a SN with the last digit a letter.
Care to take another look?

A lot of folks gripe and moan about the sprag transfer case in a deuces - you hear darn few people complain about the front axle drive in the five ton. Kinda proof that the sprag system ain't half bad, ain't it! Difference is, in the deuce, a mechanical linkage selects the forward or reverse...
There sure is a number stamped in the frame, its visible under the left front fender. I'd be willing to bet its not really a M51, but a M51A1, so the VIN will start M723 if it came with a winch from the factory, or a M51A2, in which case the VIN will probably begin 9523.

You can get a headlight switch from Memphis Equipment - 901-774-0600 - they can supply a manual as well. Since you don't have a manual, you may not know you drove that 45 miles without brakelights. If you weren't giving hand signals, this was probably thrilling for the folks behind you...
Folks, I've not read this entire thread - and I am not inclined to - but a few points come up.
First, a lot of folks are complaining "GL doesn't comply with my state's laws" - newsflash - I don't either - and likely neither do you. Ever exceeded the posted speed limit? Towed without proper...
