We used 3-4 people. We had one person standing up on the engine/air-cleaner/bed, holding a strap looped around the PTO, similar to what Ramdough did with the ratchet strap. We felt the person was able to control it better than with clicks of a ratchet strap, but if you don't have the people...
That's about what I was running into too, when I looked into it. Some people have said they easily found places that did it for a few hundred dollars, so I've been hoping I was just looking in the wrong places (but haven't gotten around to doing more searching).
It's not very complex, but that's not the same thing as "easy". The PTO is challenging, because you have to move to a different spot to get at each bolt, and even then some of them are awkwardly at arm's length.
The front roller fairlead is integrated into the front passenger-side cab mount...
It's hard to get the PTO installed with the tank installed. Each bolt on the PTO takes tightening from a different awkward position... reaching up from underneath, laying on top of the muffler, reaching down from near the coolant tank, reaching around from where the hydraulic tank is, etc. We...
Sure, but I think the question going on here is, "Is it the road LESS traveled, or the road NEVER traveled?". Seth (Adventure Driven) was the only person I knew of that was actually driving around in an LMTV, his was fairly modest (just an interior in an M1079), and even he is hanging up the...
I'm curious to see where this thread goes because, like you originally pointed out, there are dozens and dozens of ambitious build threads that start out, but I've only seen a couple that got to a point where they were done and driving around at all.
(That's exactly why I just keep mine as a...
I just provided both links so you could read the information, as the eBay posts include more than the SS ad. (And, someone else is going to come along and ask too, so I figured I'd lay it all out there.)
It's $125 shipped. $10 more total on eBay to cover the fees.

You can always find a story where one was needed, my main point was that it's an edge case, and most of the time it's not needed. So for every 1000 LMTV owners out there, maybe 100 (10%) have a locker, and 1 of those (10% of 10%) have actually used it to get free. And it doesn't stop there...
I'm not sure how you would really quantify "need". The locker makes the truck more capable, though only in more extreme situations than are typically encountered. The nature of these trucks means you don't generally go to as many of the more extreme places that you would with a Jeep, for...
I just bought some quality synthetic power steering fluid.
(P.S. All those capacities are listed in the parts spreadsheets - mine below in my signature, or the Stickied one.)
A few years ago the real NSN'd Pewag chains were plentiful and cheap. I picked them up for $150/pair, shipped! (I don't know how the seller made any money off them.)
One thing I've personally decided is that when I see an item available for sale that I want for my truck, I buy it right then...
There are some FMTVs around that were refurbished at depot in like 2008. They are noticeably nicer, and would probably buy you some extra longetivity. They sell for a premium, of course.
These trucks will go a lot of places, and do a lot of things an F-650 won't. I'm not trying to talk you...
No, no 20+ year old vehicles are, until you've owned it long enough to have replaced everything made out of plastic and rubber.
That's why one from Accela costs $150k. They buy one at auction for $10k, then put $50k of parts, and $100k of labor into it, to replace all the hoses, seals, valves...
You're looking at the problem all wrong, and asking the wrong question(s) because of it.
The "predictable costs" are very small. Most are not time based, but rather mileage based. Because these trucks are not driven like a daily-driver, the maintenance schedules don't mean as much as they...
