Truck was built in 1975 - some would say 1974, but I am confident with 1975.
How much is a truck worth??? As a hobby - whatever you are happy paying and the seller is happy taking. Lots of folks complain about paying too much - but most of these folks have visions of being a dealer - and a...
The M170 was classified standard per Ordnance Committee Minutes 34665, the Ordnance Book of Standards, March 26, 1953.
It'll take me a bit more digging to give you more info. It would help if we had the VIN of the vehicle. If the dashboard data plates are missing, or suspect, there is a...

This is an update to what I posted earlier - and goes back a bit further in time. One of these days I'll take it the rest of the way back to WWII - and also address the other branches of service.
BEWARE - don't confuse colors with numbers. The color numbering system that most collectors are...
M16ty - sure, post it.
Littlebob - I've seen the photo of the exhaust hanger you've posted in the other thread, that, plus the bolted motor mount lead me to believe the truck was born a gasser. That being the case this could be the first truck that medlog refers to - the 1952 truck with the...
Look at the frame on the passenger's side, between the centerline of the front axle and the step. Probably a number there.
Look at the right rear motor mount, and tell us if it is bolted or riveted.
The data plate is a replacement.
Are there any numbers painted on the underside of the hood...
The gas OA-331 began to be replaced with the LDS-427 in 1961. The LD-465 replaced the 427 in June 1965, and the LDT replaced the LD in about 1972 (don't have my notes with me - so I could be off a year or so).
In 1966 this truck would have had a LD-465 and a horizontal exhaust.

David
I'd not neccessarily blame the GL guys - I can take you to any of dozens of M37s in my area with bent driveshafts - and this was well before GL even existed. DRMO and a big fork lift - pick a deuce up by the bumper and push it around, and HOPE the forks don't get into the radiator - or pickup a...
RE: tranny fluid
The military became involved with the Hydramatic transmission during WWII, using them in the M5A1 and M24 tanks. Tests were conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground utilizing the Hydramatic in the CCKW.
Along came the G-749 (M135/M211) at a time when the Army arguably had more...
If the housing is in fact burst (and with a grade 8 bolt, there is a good chance of it), it is more practical to replace the entire winch than to replace the housing (which requires a total tear down of the winch). Also, examine the transmission casing where the PTO is attached carefully...
The folks at South Bend did us a favor by stamping both the registration number and the VIN number on the data plate for a while. But they sure caused a lot of confusion with the way they did it.
The ID of NK04NB054011479 breaks down like this:
NK04NB is the registration number.
054011479 is...
Re: RE: Govt liquidation & hillary?
The axe you have to grind about this is not with GL - but rather DoD - complain to your congresscritter. GL isn't the one who wants the stuff back, its Uncle Sugar, GL just has to do the fetching.
Regards,
David
Well, the dash data plate is an obvious replacemenet - so I am suspect of any information that comes from it. It is far too easy to make a mistake.
An "M" prefix on a VIN is indicative that the truck was built in South Bend, a nine-digit vin is also indicative of a South Bend-built truck. A...
Your truck has one of those unusual serial numbers that could point to one of a number of manufacturers.....if the number above is correct, it was probably built by the Lansing Division of White (aka Reo Motors in about 1961-62. But at this point that doesn't really constitute more than an...
If you have the correct quantity of movable numbers, the spring-like tension of these holds the "C" plate in place, and it in turn holds the numbers in place.
There is a small steel strap that goes across the back of the bridge weight classification plate, which is held in place by two bolts...
