Take the air line off the clutch, and use a blow gun and pressurize the clutch. This will tell you if the clutch works or not. Next pull the temp switch, I read hear it's an open closed elec circuit type. Boil some water and with multi meter leads on the sensor output dunk the sensor probe in...
Fancy disconnects are also one more item that can break. If one shaft fails to re-lock the truck isn't going anywhere, without a tow that is. HA!! It would probably be easier to re power, and put in a true transfer case that could even have a low range. It's just money, and as I tell my...
Drive train is disconnected by popping the u-joints at the axle or one can pull the shafts from the rear and pull only the front u-joint. If there was a better way the army would have done it. When these trucks brake down they bring in a wrecker. 15min and the right tools and you can flat tow...
not for the lmtv geard wheel reduction. Owning an LMTV I can say for fact that it would not be fun towing that kind of weight, with all of the parasitic drag of turning everything through another trans. You might get up to speed on a flat or downhill, but any incline and I bet top speed will...
You have to disconnect the axles in some manner. You can pull the rear axles out, and disconnect the front u joint. That would be the easiest option. But often towing a whole truck 300+ miles. I'd expect 3-4mpg or less. Flat tow's and tight corners are no fun. Accelerated tire and hub...
You don't want to just hop in and take off with large diesels, they should be warmed up a bit, especially if your running motor oil in the trans still. A M1078 is shorter than a crew cab, long bed pickup. At least mine is shorter than my ram 3500. I would really look to drive one first hand...
So you get a 20ish year old vehicle driven by kids who absolutely beat the heck out of it. Expect repairs to cost 5 times as much if you don't do it yourself. You will need tons of new tools. Don't bust your door handles!!!! If you want a/c $$$. Cat prices for parts... slow top speed...
Hopefully your 1078 is an A1 truck with the 3126 engine, or you will be spending a lot of time on the wiring. I'd love to have that cab on my truck and I bet worth all the hassle to install.
It's by far the best upgrade I have done so far. I paid 1.4k for my gears a while ago. Keeps the engine off the red line at 55-60. Made the driving experience much better.
I think these trucks would do well with a slightly larger turbo that spools faster, and capable of flowing more air for those the turn the fuel screw. Snowtrac is on to something when he says the governor de fuels early, need to figure out how to delay that. Thing is the 3116 is known for...
