Are you sure it's the front gear case? My leak in that area after cleaning it all up I found to be from the governor above the compressor. There was a doohickey sensor thing held in by a bracket and the bracket had broken allowing its o ring seal to seep. So I bent the hold down bracket and...
The fronts the hubs have to come off, along with the brake spider and then you can pull the front axle shafts. With axle shafts pulled you can un-bolt the center section and remove. Fairly straight forward. It will be much more involved on a 6x6 as the center axle has more to take apart, and...
Just slightly, as the turbo spools, it starts to pull. Shifts from 2nd to 3rd about 8mph. What I like is not being in 7th At 35mph. In my opinion it makes each gear more useable. I think with the 290 engines it would be perfect.
Drove all around town, and on the highway. Went through a bunch of parking lots and never knew the locker was there. Now the high speed gears, love them. 45 indicates is now 60
I did notice pulling out of my drive way onto a dirt road the inside tire left a track. Really haven't noticed anything else. Also drove into my manure pile to get the truck off kilter, got the rear two tires to spin. Where in the past only one would.
Interesting tidbit. Still hearing hub noise and having had both fronts off and on and correctly shimmed, figures it was time to check the rear. So I drove a rear tire up on some blocks to run the gear lube to the other side of the axle. I popped the cover, caught the cup of oil that was still...
Also on the older trucks there is a relay for the starter in the dash. Was the cause of my truck not starting and why I got it cheap at auction. Before I figured out the relay it was started by jumping the starter solinoid to get it on and off the transport truck. Spend some time looking over...
Could be the knuckle u joint. Parts I would want on hand not knowing what I'm getting into would be.
a spindle, axle shafts, a full hub, seals, and a bunch of gear oil. When a hub gernades puts a lot of broken metal and maybe damaging the parts listed. Could have been caused by improper setup...
That's a good idea, my spare bucket got full of gear oil from the axle. Also I needed access to the pinion to turn it for setting the contact area on the gears, since I didn't check lash prior to disassembley. As rotating the ring gear isn't the right way. If I didn't live on the other side...
They have locktight on them, I torqued to tight? , keeping in mind that the yokes are not something you want to strip. Re check torque after a few miles of driving
It's not too difficult to do. And yes scribe everything. It was actually a little easier than I had expected. Parts are heavy though. I set my center section on two jack stands and that allowed for the pinion to spin below. Made life a lot easier
Just make sure you measure the gear lash before you take it apart, and return it to the same gear lash on re assembly. I did not and it caused me a lot of extra work.
Pedal to the floor, 90 degree turn, no chirp. Added a shim to a front hub, made it a lot quieter. Now can hear that the rears need adjustment. And yes need to get off road still.
First street drive of the locker. Only got it to lock on one corner really trying. Sounded like something rolling in the bed, and not a loud bang. Other than that never noticed it. The high speed gears are very nice addition. Gear changes are much smoother, held speed up hills better...
Only need the tool for stuck joints. I've done some where I needed it, and some where a little kick popped them. All depends on if they are rusted in or not
Well it's going to be a pretty cool rv when your done. They make a longer bed fmtv, may be a good start, or perhaps lengthen between the wheels on a normal one.
