Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

I've made really good progress today. The passenger side is all apart except the seal(s) inside the axle housing. The driver's side is where I'm hung up: what's the trick to getting the steering arm to let go of the steering knuckle? I've got the bolts off and have given it some significant love...

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

I've made some good progress today getting the brake shoe assemblies and backing plates off, and just removed the tie rod. BUT in so doing I damaged the threads on one of the tie rod nuts. Anyone have these in stock or should I look again at McMaster-Carr or something? Nevermind the tie-rod nut...

DB, you've given me something to look up. Don't know what an extractor is but clearly I didn't invent this problem! Thanks.

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

Day 3: began to remove the first axle flange, and on the 3rd bolt I broke my ratchet. Edit: Day 3 continued. I switched over to using a box-end wrench inside a 3' steel pipe and removed the remaining bolts, BUT one of them sheared off deep in the hub. I suppose I need a new hub now? I could try...

    Broken Wheel Stud

I'm doing the front axle boots, and finding some of my studs are pretty rusty. Are replacements readily available?

Hey, it's humid. Maybe this weekend I'll get a lot done. The Marine Corps League wants her in a parade on 9/15, that's my motivation!

Day 1: broke loose all the lug nuts. Day 2: set her up on jack stands and removed the front wheels. Yep, I set a blistering pace!

Very poor experience with "The Gathering IX" in Louisville

Priority #1 right now is to do the front axle boot repair. I'm guessing if I had shown up in the deuce today instead of a F-150 they would have stuck around a minute. I have a parade coming up Sept 15th.

Very poor experience with "The Gathering IX" in Louisville

Gimpy had told me that this event was going to be here in August so of course I was looking forward to it. The only publicity I could find was in a local paper called "The Voice." Listed no schedule, just a contact phone number and an e-mail. I called the number, it was no longer in service. I...

    Deuce start up?

With diesel I never had to touch the pedal but with WMO just a tap. Letting the fuel pump run a few seconds before starting seems to work, too.

Satellite photos of your (or other) MV's

Around here it's the opposite: Google Earth is from last summer but Bing is from 5-7 years ago!

    Hood hinge orientation

From those who have done it: any tips for reaching the nuts up in the firewall to remove the hood hinges?

Get done everything from pg 1 of this thread in 3 hours? My first time? I am not seeing that happening...I am not the fastest with these things, though.

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

Here's a question: assume I only have a couple hours a week to work on this. Is it OK to leave the deuce sitting on jack stands under the front axle housing for like a month? Not sure if that would be a good idea or not...

Hmm, are you planning on re-doing yours soon? I would love to come and help and learn on yours before doing my own!

Front axle seals and boots stepXstep

Noticed my boot / seal leaking today. Well, I didn't see the leak but noticed globs of grease on the tire. I'll do a search but are zippered or non-zippered boots superior? Better read up...

    No Garage, Need Insurance

My other vehicles are with Met Life and they flat out refused to consider the deuce, garage or no.
