I would use wire #10, add a circuit breaker and have it all separate from the original wiring. Agree with dieselbob, easy to restore to original too.
In the diagram, note how accessories are added from the "horn" breaker area.
When the circuit is open (=wire cut), the gauge will show full deflection, you may have a bad connection.
To check your sending unit, compare readings to those in the image below.

I don't blame you for starting a new thread, had to go through my own posts to find it..there appear to be more than one problem with the site today.
No problem Eric, theoretically, since there is some positive crankcase pressure and the tube originates on top of the engine, the engine must be submerged for water to enter.
The TM's are generally not good at explaining the "why", the only state what must be done and how to use the equipment...
Much appreciated, the reason for the question is that my alternator self limits at about 100 amps when my nicad battery pack is charged and was curious about the ratings. From available info, the 3-phase full wave rectification only exposes the diodes to 33% of the total load, so all is...
Depends on what "As it is now" refers to, the crankcase will take in water if the breather tube is not modified from stock when the water reaches the air intake.
If the "What's wrong with it in stock form" question is directed to me (you asked twice), there are two reasons, one to simplify the...
Outstanding! Thank you.
So, it's a 35 amp diode...need to see how they are used in the 100 amp alternator.
Eric, thanks for looking, found them on ebay also...but no spec...
Spent a couple of hours last night without success trying to find the specifications for this rectifier (diode) used in the 100 amp alternator.
Never got beyond the NSN or part number. Any help would be appreciated.
NSN 2920-00-114-3370 or 11646895.
TIA
If you measure the pressure in the crankcase, you'll find it's slightly positive. There is no under pressure and the original "road draft" tube just helps in getting rid of the oil laden fumes.
The filter in my application does not create a restriction. It is a common solution to engine...
Yes, it was done to simplify preparations for fording, swimming in particular. The m656 series with the LDS465-2 engine has an engine compartment that can be completely submerged with a 5-minute "pressurization of components" wait only.
I added a crankcase breather filter (Crankvent) to speed...
An observation.
Using 24VDC (or 12) to 120VAC inverters, powered from lead acid batteries is so common that apparently the inverter manufacturers limit the low voltage input to exactly 10.5 or 21 VDC, since harm will come the LA battery if discharged further.
A NiCd battery can run down beyond...
The best advise here would be to have you remove the hydraulic head.
The plunger moves about 1/4 inch and rides on a cam. If the cam lobe is sitting in the "up" position, you cannot force the plunger down...
A lead-acid battery is perfect for one application only, to start a good running vehicle that is driven daily or almost daily. Very little of its capacity is used, a few amp-hours only and it's put right back when the car is driven off.
Just about any other situation is a compromise for the LA...
There are many references in PS magazine concerning nicad batteries, here are a couple. Note, KOH (potassium hydroxide, also used in biodiesel making) is not explosive, but corrosive, Hydrogen plus oxygen will explode under the right conditions, just like the gassing from a lead acid battery...
The self discharge rate reads about right based on my references also, but so what?
Quoting:
All batteries, regardless of their chemistry, will self-discharge. The rate of self-discharge for lead acid batteries depends on the storage or operating...
