OK, well, the housing might be OK. Since I had knocked off a bit of the inner lip I went ahead and used the dremel to get the seal out. I pushed out all the lip that was cracked, and maybe 1/3 of it is gone. But it looks to me like I can get a new seal in there and it will seat OK. I think I'll...
Well, crap. That seal is oxidized to the housing and I can't get it out. I tried using a tiny punch and hobby hammer to curl the lip in and separate it from the edge. In doing so I knocked out a piece of the housing itself (the inner ring where the seal sits).
I guess now I'm looking for a...
OK, making some progress today. Got the compressor belt off (thanks for the wrench loan, gimpy!) and I'm headed to Napa for parts.
WHAT is the trick for getting the old seal (the metal ring with the rubber gasket) out of the thermostat housing body? I've tried needle-nose pliers and hitting...
Yes I did open the block drain yesterday and got some additional coolant out. Alltogether I probably got between 8-9 gallons out, which is pretty close to capacity.
Thanks for the pointer on the lower hose I had written down NAPA part 7759 from the resources link above?
I've tried searching the TM (the -20 PDF file) for this topic but I tried searching "main bearing seal" "front bearing seal" etc to no avail. What section?
Napa part numbers:
Thermostat: THM358180
Seal: 4662
Housing gasket: THM1040ST
I haven't tried installing all these yet but these are the parts I bought.
Here's my planned course of action at this point:
The belts are not bad but I see some little cracks so I'm going to replace all...
I've had the truck since Dec. 30th but only got plates for it this week. It made the 50-mile trip from Frankfort to my house at normal temp, back in Dec. But since I've started driving it last week, I've noticed it running on the high side of the temp gauge. If I've run it for a while, I'm also...
Well, I seem to be facing a little setback. I took the old thermostat and put it in hot water on the stove, and it seems to open up at 180 like it should. For the sake of comparison I put the brand new one in with it. The new one opens a little faster and a little further, but not a whole lot...
Now general cooling system questions (edited)
I've got the radiator coming off today (it's draining now) and my plan is to replace the thermostat, of course check the belts and at least tension the compressor belt while I'm in there. I'll probably replace the hoses unless they look like new...
That is a great-looking truck. Did the load shift much on you? Looks like it coulda spilled over the rails but...eh, what's a little mulch over the side.
And what's this wheelbarrow bs? Just back the truck up to the mulch-needing area and kick some out!
I was born and raised near Troy, OH...
Made it home OK. Towards the end the temp gauge got up around 220 but never got to the top. I was staying under 1800 RPMs on the highway and under 1500 on surface streets. Fortunately wasn't much traffic out. And the last 2 miles, I got behind a pair of bicyclists and was able to use them as an...
