Greasability is actually important for engineering reasons, not stuff like hearing a squeak. The original rubber bushings are soft rubber, so that the mount can flex and deflect in a number of directions as the axle moves. With the polyurethane, the bushings are made harder which improves the...
Roughly speaking, balancing and straightening a shaft is around $100. Replacing the yoke on one end cost me about $250 more. Opening the tube to take out the cardboard was $100. New u-joints (good USA-made Neapco's) about $50/each. So for me it was $450 total for the front, and $275 for the rear.
Anybody know what the purpose of this cable loop in the bumper is for? Someone went to a lot of effort to install it, but I can't figure out what it's useful for. It's not strong enough to hang something from.
It's not "jumping on the bandwagon", it's a rebuttal to his comments. I can turn your statement around and say that if nobody argued against what Porky said the original poster might think every FMTV has never managed to be driven off the lot it was built on.
All the old trucks (e.g. FMTVs...
Just a little further explanation on this, for those who may read this in the future...
Universal joints do not turn at a constant speed, they pulse (speed up as one part of the u-joint comes around, then slow down for the next, then speed up, and down...). The steeper the angle of the shaft...
Today I decided to change my air/hydraulic system oil back to the 5606H. I had naively refilled it with regular tractor hydraulic oil after the cab latch seals failed a while back. The 5606H has corrosion inhibitors that help keep the system from rusting out from the inside, and costs about...
I think that says enough for me.
The trucks are fine (and I'm one that destroyed an engine), the military has 100,000 of them in service, and they have received an award for being the most reliable vehicle the military has ever had. These are the same grumpy arguments made about any new...
Best way that I've seen to change a tire is this (using pipes)... https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?152218-Essential-Tools-to-have-for-an-FMTV-Add-your-02&p=1864906&viewfull=1#post1864906
The JW Speaker type above? Those are what I have in mine (came that way), and I hate them. I've tried re-aiming them, but they seem to just not throw light very far.
I think Suprman once said he actually prefers them to the Truck-Lite kind, which makes me wonder how bad they are (unless I...
I've been thinking about replacing my lights with the LED models. However, when I search for them, I find a lot of variations, differences, NSNs, etc. Anybody have any clear answers about which ones are "correct" / direct replacements (no modifications necessary)? Specifically, here are some...
Did they give you any advice about removing it or replacing it? I was a little skeptical of them taking it out, since it was put in there intentionally, but they seemed to have a good technical description of how it should mostly be used in longer shafts with thinner walls.
A few days ago I posted this over in Aleigh's thread: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?174867-LMTV-Alternator-Disaster-engine-now-catastophic&p=2102931&viewfull=1#post2102931
