The problem is you need heat over time to dry out the windings if water gets on them, starting it up with moisture in the windings is a recipe for making it into a big paperweight, hence the tarp, heat, and low humidity. On the rain question these generator ends are generally designed to be...
If you pressure wash the generator end it is important to get all the moisture out before starting it, this is best done by placing a tarp over it and putting a heater or heat lamp under the tarp for several days preferably when it is low humidity. There are also a few parts I would watch out...
You might want to check over on the Smokstak Onan Generator board, one of the regulars (Gunny) was just talking about someone that had added a turbocharger to a J series engine like this one the other day.

EaglHawk, there are several reasons why it is bad to run a diesel generator lightly loaded, wetstacking is probably the most common one, but there are others such as avoiding carbon buildup on injector tips, etc. As a rule of thumb you want a diesel generator to see at least 70% load on a...
A 1500 watt generator is better than no generator at all, with 1500 watts you can run plenty of LED or CF light bulbs, keep a refrigerator and a chest freezer cold during a summer outage, power a typical blower fan on a gas heater, etc.
Just don't do it, and if you are not getting fuel from the injection pump it would not help anything, you need to either bleed the air out of the lines, or you may need to repair the injection pump. When these units sit for a long time the fuel can gum up the injection pump, then when you try...
Talking about EMP is sort of taboo around here as these threads tend to quickly get out of control. Having said that if I were worried about it I would pick up a few spare transistors for the AVR board, and just make sure the wiring was not connected to anything.
My concern about the Inova Hightech controller (unless it has changed) is that it only offers a single cranking attempt before going into an error mode that requires a manual power switch cycling to try again. This generator is going to be located at a remote site with potential cold weather...
I had one that did somewhat the reverse of this, was stable for a while, then once warmed up voltage would be unstable, I ended up the AVR board with one of Jim's retrofit drop in replacement boards. Eventually I may get around to troubleshooting the components.
I would confirm that you have no continuity between L0 (as well as all the other output lugs) and the frame frame first, then if not proceed as we have discussed and add the L2 to frame/ground jumper. This would in effect make your L2 your neutral connection.
Like Jim said it varies from generator to generator, but to put it simply the MEP-002a / MEP-003a voltage regulation circuit often can not build to full voltage from the slight amount of residual magnetism in the generator end, so they added a field flashing circuit that operates while the...
Sorry I was picturing the layout on the MEP-016B, the concept is the same though, you need to add a jumper between L2 and the frame ground, both connected to your ground rod for 120V single phase only operation. Nothing else needs to be disconnected unless you have another frame ground bonding...
I just have a moment to type, so will be quick
The only wire on the back side of the lugs you want to touch is the jumper going to the frame ground, if it does not exist, don't do anything to the other. The jumper should be made out of #6 stranded wire, as to ease of routing, I can't say much...
When operating in 120V single phase only stand alone mode, you need to add a jumper between L2 and the frame ground, both should then be connected to the ground rod. In other voltage modes this jumper may be connected between L0 and the frame ground, so you need to check and move the jumper if...
