    Thermostat: what is normal operation

Thermostats are proportionally opening devices, they throttle flow of coolant to maintain a certain temperature point. They work on the fact certain types of wax expand when melting, like most solid-liquid pairs act (other than water, ammonia etc). Melting wax forces the valve open via a...

Threatened fail on state inspection no cats

Must be talking about light trucks not having catalytic converters pre 2004 because my VW tdi has one. Reading the regulations, it explicitly states fuel cap testing is not required for diesels yet I have seen it done on that car.

Threatened fail on state inspection no cats

Well, older diesels don't have catalysts. But telling that to a minimum wage pseudo government employee is like herding cats.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

If I am feeling up to it, a few hours in the afternoon should work. Looks like time for 4000 PSI water blasting on the carrier. We will get pressure to the rear brakes.

is it OK to leave the front hub locked when patches of ice are expected

Funny Doghead. Getting back lack to the hubs..easiest way to see how they work is to take them apart..which is annual maintenance issue per TM. They have to come off to access the bearings. Best set way to answer your question. Just splines lining up which locks the shaft to hub.

is it OK to leave the front hub locked when patches of ice are expected

The hubs are full floating so the bearings must have support.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

That brake fluid was from the rears where we could not get flow so it probably is DOT5. I would like to blow the lines out with compressed air but with good pressure up front, chances are the plug in the lines is at that pesky quick disconnect. Pulling it might be a good thing, if only the...

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

Yes, off road designs. The bushings aren't worn, the springs have not set compared to the originals. Installing the ORD set cured the problem, for a few years. There isn't enough free length in the spring for a 1/4" spacer before the coils crash. I might try the old washers as they are 60...

is it OK to leave the front hub locked when patches of ice are expected

Not an issue, unless you have a limited slip front as do some 1028s and the 1031s. Then it is just quirky steering at lower speeds since the knuckle drive shaft joint is a single Cardan universal joint, not a constant velocity affair. So the angular velocity differences in the carrier with...

    M35 fuel troubles

Ad you got off easy. I've had to pull that lever, cutting the safety wires and removing the screws. Then took the lever off the shaft and cleaned the bore and shaft. Careful reassembly, then aligning the pawl with the control block. If you let fuel quality suffer, you will have to pull the...

    M35 fuel troubles

The accelerator pedal controls the governor. The governor then controls engine speed, according to accelerator position. That the engine hit 3300 RPM means the link between the governor and injection pump is suspect. Most probable is the fuel control lever is stuck. On the inside of this...

    3rd alt for M1008, 09, 28, etc

Compressed air is easy to get on my M1031 SECM. Well, when not moving, transfer case in neutral, PTO engaged and transmission in drive. Flip two breakers, wait a minute and 120 PSI air ( I set the off pressure a bit higher, the pop off is a 150 PSI).

Threatened fail on state inspection no cats

It happened AGAIN, and also in Texas. My youngest son has a M1009 he went to get inspected at the same place as last year, they failed it because of a modified exhaust without catalytic converters. I'm going to print out the TX regulation plus the pages from the -34P, then pull rank as the...

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

Steering box play can be adjusted, time to dust off the -34

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

Could it be weight? The ambulance my partner in FMVs had didn't do it as far as I know. But it also has a 208 transfer case and no Lima MAC generator. The air compressor is also a hundred with it's motor. The full road test passed, if it does it again, I will slip the old bushing caps in...

    What do you build?

should have brazen the joints with either refrigeration silver or phosphor bronze. Keep it at atmospheric pressure and it should be fine. Outdoor boilers for home heating are a bit different.

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

The stabilizer had a dead spot in travel where there was no damping. So far, the new damper has eliminated all instances, down hill going 35 mph with slight braking.

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

Pretty sure it isn't steering universal joint, I checked those for play last time the front wheels were off. There is no play anywhere in the steering system, other than the occasionional DW, it drives like a new 1980s one ton 4x4. Because it only had 9009 miles on it when purchased in 2012...

    Death wobble AGAIN!?

Back in 2012, my 1031 developed serious death wobble, the steering stabilizer was leaking oil and corroded so I replaced that along with the upper kingpin bushings and springs. This cured it. Doing my annual service last week, I greased everything and suddenly DW returned. And the steering...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Did more spot rust treatment. Thin CARC has weathered to the point of rust bleeding through the e coat. Instead of using PTO powered air compressor, I connected my MEP 002A to the circuit breaker for the compressor and rand like that. Not enough for constant DA sander but good enough to...
