Winter is coming, and we will get periods as low as -20°F around here, with brief lows even worse. I have a couple questions about the ether start and cold weather use.
1.) This 3116 engine has glow plugs, correct? There is no dash indicator, like I'm used to.
2.) Is there any way to tell...
The small seal in the cover is just a dust guard, not a seal. There are two actual seals in the whole assembly, which hold back hydraulic fluid.
1.) The big o-ring on the piston, which can be replaced as described above. (Was it #221?).
2.) A small o-ring in the main body of the latch (the...
Hi guys,
I'm replacing the water pump (stupid thing cracked while driving on the highway), and have a question about the coolant type and quantity.
1.) The coolant that was in the engine is green, but the Caterpillar brand that I bought is red. Does anyone have any experience with which is...
Called a local truck dealer that can order Cat parts. For anyone in the future that searches and finds this post...
The water pump uses an o-ring type seal. The pump is $272.85 (plus a core charge of $141.95). The o-ring seal is $2.53. The water pump belt is $12.13.
Today I think I blew the gasket on the water pump (hopefully not the whole pump). Is a Cat 3116 just a standard engine, in many other trucks, that I can get parts for from a medium duty truck shop? Same question would apply to the pump, I suppose, if it turns out that is bad.
Thanks!
I've thought about trying to make camping / tailgating accessories that plug into the holes, like trailer hitch accessories. You could use both to create a tent/canopy support, or make a camp cook box or grill that hangs from one.
My problems were not the same as yours. The inside of my latch cylinder was shiny and clean, and it all moved smoothly by hand.
There is (or should be) an o-ring that seals the large latch-side pin, but it's inside the cylinder housing, not on the pin itself.
The "orange" fluid is likely...
If you aren't confident drilling, you could grind it off using a Dremel. Much less pressure, so easier to control. I don't think bolting it back together would be bad - just use nylon locking nuts and some washers. Even getting a new rivet in there wouldn't be the end of the world.
If...
He can make resin handles, but there is little hope it will ever be stronger than the cheaply cast aluminum original. If he's using Smooth-On brand products, he'll want to try the "Task" series of performance plastics.
Honestly, the best way would be to just have one machined out of billet...
Just an update. No amount of raising/lowering, prying, jumping on, or clamping would latch the cab. I drove it a mile or two, and it was latched. It must just need a bit of jostling that can't be done by hand.
I'm wondering if maybe it just needs to have the pin taken out and a little bit...
Hi guys,
I'm looking at the wiring diagrams, and wondering where the best place in the cab to patch in a 12V & 24V circuit is? I'm wanting to add a 12V backup camera, and a 24V rooftop search light. I just have a base M1078 (e.g. no winch, cab strobe, etc.), though I do have a [radio?] cable...
I'm not opposed to a crane, but a crane is not really a direct substitute for a ramp, or vice-versa... so lets try to keep this about ramps. I'll probably end up with both anyway.
I'm not too concerned about 16-20' ramps. My idea is that they could fold up. So you can either have ~16' ramps...
This is my current leading theory. Any idea what would cause that, or where I should start looking to solve it?
Also just to clarify, what constitutes as the lock pin being fully latched? I'm guessing that fully locked means the head of the pin is submerged under the face of the nut, not...
I wish I could get a better look at what the latch is doing when the cab lowers, but there is just too much in the way with no good way to view it. It seems like the cab is seating fully in the latch - far enough for the lock pin to engage - but I want to prove it. I wonder if I can raise the...
Is the lock just an added safety precaution, or is it what is doing ALL the holding down of the cab while driving? So it is totally unsafe to drive unless the cab can latch?
