MEP 802a ran out of fuel, is hard starting now, running on 1 cylinder?

The copper crush washers on diesel injectors should be re-annealed before reuse ( hang them on a steel wire and heat them to a dull red with a propane torch, then let them air cool) otherwise they generally don't need to be replaced most of the time. As the others have said it sounds like you...

    Opinions on MEP-831A

I plan to pick one up some day, but feel for the most part the MEP-016D or MEP-016E is likely the better choice for most people for emergency standby, that is if fixed up right. The MEP-016D's that I have seen seem to have totally neglected the 40+ year old wiring in the control box during the...

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

Hard to say higher elevation means the engine looses power, but also mean the air can't conduct heat away as fast either. I would guess in the real world you can probably sustain a load of 3.5 to 4 KW, but that is just a guess and don't blame me if the magic smoke escapes. Ike p.s. a normally...

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

The easiest way is to switch the reconnection switch inside the control box to 240V single phase (engine must be off when switch is turned), and with the output breaker turned on use a multi meter measure to see that you get 240V between L1 -L2 and 120V between L1 and L0 as well as between L2...

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

By the military, but none seem to show any modification markings for this, and no one that I know of has found documentation on it. This change may have even happened during the production run. From casual survey of owners online it seems at least 80-90% are really 120/240 split single phase

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

Some / Many of these have been modified to output 120/240 split single phase, it is just not covered in the docs

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

I think the rest is correct, note that the ground jumper to the grounding point is often already installed, but is usually connected to the back side of the output lug inside the control box, not the outside connector point. Also that grounding of L-2 would be correct for a 240V only 2 wire...

TM and Wiring question for MEP701A/16B

There are a number of major mistakes in the MEP-016B / MEP-701a TM's , the 120V box in the 240V single phase connection diagram is just one of them. Also note this is pure 240V by the book, not 120/240V split single phase, altough it seems many, but not all of these generators were modified...

    MEP 002 no start

Yes there is, the shims should never change on these and should always stay with the engine block as it controls the backlash for the gears. I have read there is a detailed process for measure spacing for the shim thickness with depth micrometers is included somewhere in the Onan Major Service...

    Mep-003A Gen Head question

The 2/3rd output rule is only valid for some generator, some have enough extra copper in the windings to be rated for full output (or close) at either 1 or 3 phase. For example my Kohler 30ROZJ commercial diesel generator is rated at 33KW 120/240 single phase and 35KW at 120/208 3 phase wye...

    MEP002 CNG conversion

Another problem with propane in an extended outage is that residential customers are the very last in line for resupply. My inlaws that lived about 40 miles from the coast in SW Louisiana used propane for heat, water heating, and cooking. When Hurricane Rita (at one point the second strongest...

    MEP 002 no start

It seems about half the time you can get them apart without heat, I have had good luck soaking in a 50/50 mix of ATF and Marvel Mystery oil in the past for similar situations, but if you have to use heat be careful those fins are made from Aluminum and give little warning before melting, they...

    MEP 002 no start

It is hard to tell much from the outside, but the one of the left looks rough, and more worrisomely rusted. You might want to send them to Storeman for a test and rebuild (you will have to remove the heat sink fins first if you do) You probably also need to do a compression test.

    MEP 002 no start

That generally does it, although you may still have a little air in the system it usually clears with just a bit of cranking, or may run rough for a minute or two until it clears out.

Got offered a MEP-007A...for free...should I take it ? What are they used for?

Funny thing is I think the MEP-007B has a Cat engine in it, the MEP-007A used an Allis Chalmers engine

    Mep-003A Gen Head question

I am not sure if the MEP-003a voltage regulator would be compatible with the MEP-004 or MEP-005 generator end, you would need to look up the exciter resistance and max amp loads in the TM's, then you would have to make an educated guess as there is no published output specs for the MEP-003a...

    MEP002 CNG conversion

Onan made high compression natural gas only J series engines, with a bit of work you might be able to swap one in, but it would probably just be easier to get an Onan JB generator already set up for natural gas.

Got offered a MEP-007A...for free...should I take it ? What are they used for?

When you say it will not idle, do you mean it will not maintain frequency? You generally don't want generators to run at a low idle speed, for one like this you generally want it at 1800 rpms whenever it is running. Ike p.s. the data plate photo says it is MEP-007B not a MEP-007A

    Mep-003A Gen Head question

You can switch between different voltages because it is a 12 lead generator, switching is done by the reconection switch on the front of the power box. Generator ends from MEP-002a's and MEP-003a's will interchange, I think we even have a member or two here that have bought surplus generators...

    MEP 002 no start

Did you loosen them at the pump end or at the injector end?
