    Starter FUBAR

I had the same thing, WITH the Doghead mod. Turned out it was missing the pinion retainer. This keeps the pinion from bashing the nose cone, with it missing it would hang up over-center, keeping the solenoid engaged. It finally broken the nose cone. I welded the nose cone back together, then...

Genset engine on a GoKart or Lawn tractor?

The 002a diesel engine would be fine for a hydrostatic drive, most need 1500 to 2000 RPM, it can be governed for that and in direct drive. Most hydrostatics use a speed reduction pulley system off the engines that normally run 3400-3600 RPM. You can get surplus hydrostatic transmissions from...

    Gen 1 & Gen 2 light ?

If the bulb checks out, it might be the relay under the dash for this circuit. It switches the back battery on with the key, since the key switch is all 12 volt circuits, this relay is what controls it. The front battery(gen 1) lamp is switched by the key switch. I found one relay to have...

Surplus MEP-002A up and running but had/have some issues!

You know you have the governor adjusted to the limit when you have minimal droop upon loading and a slight amount of hunting when a large load is disconnected. It takes time, do it with the engine at operating temperature and shutters open. I too use the screwdriver method to adjust the star...

    Towing a CUCV

We towed my M1031 SECM from Sparta WI to Central TX flat tow using medium military tow bar. Transfer and transmission in neutral, hubs free up front and rear driveshaft disconnected. Batteries disconnected and steering wheel unlocked. Towed behind F250 SD crew cab just fine.

Am I the only one with the wrong Mirror on my CUCV?

What you favor. I prefer flat on both. These are easy to DIY replace, cheap to ship too. Attaches with double stick foam tape.

    CUCV m1008 Tire Rotation

Radials traditionally are rotated front to rear, no cross as this will change direction of rotation unless demounted and reversed. As this requires thought, it is best not attempted. The Detroit Locker may make right side wear a bit more.

    Runaway multifuel 6/20/14

Some diesel engines can operate with 50+% exhaust gas recirculation, note there is a lag time as when first EGR kicks in, there is more oxygen in the exhaust gas. Progressively, the oxygen content decreases but since there is always fresh air (measured by mass) intake, the engine won't die. It...

    M1009 CUCV 24V No Start

Have someone watch exhaust pipes while cranking, or adjust mirrors so you can see them. White smoke means fuel is being injected, without operating glow plugs, ignition is difficult but possible, with enough cranking in warm weather.

    Suggested air tank size?

I can do 5 of the 8 lug nuts on a 1008 with my little pancake. All if I stop the impact wrench when they are broke loose, then drain the tank spinning them off as very little pressure is needed. tank size is a function of compressor output, you would never get a 50 gallon tank filled with a 1...

    Two battery questions

Dual purpose marine batteries work just fine as long as you don't have very cold weather. Group 27 batteries are the same size as 31s except for the terminal locations, not a real problem if you carefully arrange the hold downs. i would not use them for a 12 volt conversion since the 24 volt...

    Glow plug failure

The glow plug relay is located under the hood on the driver side firewall, near the warning to not jumper the gp relay. There are several styles.

    M1009 Heavy Maintenance Visit

Clecos rock! Excellent work! You also don't have to worry about heat causing corrosion. My step son's 1009 had cracks on the floor pan where the seats bolted, those had to be welded. Dirty job wire wheeling underneath and preserving the metal.

    old diesel question

Diesel with biodiesel in it can absorb and hold more water than ordinary petroleum diesel. When the hybrid diesel has appreciable water content, it becomes cloudy when chilled, if it is cloudy at room temperatures, it should not be used until decanted from water sediment and diluted with fresh...

    Few questions on fuel delivery

Nasty. Dropping the tank is a lot of work but worth it. Corrosion may be an issue.

    1st Milsurplus generator buy..think I did ok

It is a thing of beauty, even with the rattle can camo job. Fix the rust and make it run, then store it under cover. Run it once a week, under load until it is fully warmed up and the louvers open. For a load bank, I use water heater elements, a 4500 watt unit is perfect, just make sure it is...

    Loose belt, hard to start?

Voltage equates to starting speed, if the batteries are low, you have lower starting speed. In the diesel, starting speed (as in crankshaft rpm), is the heat needed to ignite diesel. Slower speeds don't heat the air as high. you could measure voltage to confirm.

Picked up 6 MEP-802A gensets and will be documenting making them all runners here

Laminated steel graphite? Most modern head gaskets are multi layer metal, not needed here as it is iron block and head. Multilayer metal are typically used on aluminum heads with iron block. thickness is most critical, you could probably make a gasket from high temperature composite sheet...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Yes, mine was leaking at highway speeds, it was a twisted o-ring that eventually failed. It is a #8 refrigeration o-ring, Viton rubber.

    Runaway multifuel 6/20/14

During a run-away as the original poster had happen, engine speed would be very high. The issue of fueling from lube oil would require choking or extinguishing with carbon dioxide.
