Here is the Delco-Remy manual for the 28MT, should help CONSIDERABLY. Pay close attention to the circuit diagram, Figure 3 for the solenoid. The pull-in coil grounds through the field coil, if the field coil has an open, the solenoid will not pull in.
Fortunately the field coil is easily...
The solenoid has two windings, one to initially pull and the other to hold. When the starter motor makes contact, the huge load drops voltage which would cause the solenoid to disengage. It sounds like a wiring issue, possibly the main wire from the 24 volt bus on the firewall.
Heat increases ionization for most liquids and solids, only exceptions would be metals with positive temperature coefficients of resistance and dissolved ionic gases like carbon dioxide in water (carbonic acid) but only because increasing temperature reduces solubility of carbon dioxide in...
Heat is your friend on stuck fittings. Don't round off nuts. Now, on the no fuel issue, track the governor linkage to where it enters the injection pump, that lever must move freely. If it doesn't, it can be fixed without pulling the pump. But it takes a ton of patience and knowledge of how...
No, this is GALVANIC corrosion. Bonding the aluminum to the iron block will accelerate corrosion. Aluminum oxide is an insulator but due to galvanic corrosion, aluminum hydroxide is formed which is more ionic than the oxide and also has a higher dissolution rate, forming a gel in the coolant...
This is chemical voltage, the aluminum is oxidizing, electrons are flowing from the aluminum, to the iron/copper parts through the chassis. Over time, this will erode the aluminum as it turns to aluminum hydroxide and or aluminum oxide. Well, it IS protecting the iron and copper from...
The aluminum is losing electrons to the iron and copper in the system. You need to electrically isolate the radiator and heater core from the chassis. And use modern coolant rated for aluminum components. Pentosin G12 is an excellent choice, commonly used in Audi/VW automobiles.
I just cannot justify the cost for a Fluke with my Klein MM2000. This is true RMS meter (useful for alternator work as the clawed poles don't produce true sine voltage) with frequency, capacitance, diode and includes type K thermocouple in addition to standard DMM features. Also, it is Korean...
Ok, you have fuel to the injection pump but no fuel to injectors? That could be the shut off solenoid. It must lift off the governor linkage to the injection pump during cranking, lift the air shroud and observe during cranking. If it energizes while cranking, the problem is in the injection...
The battery charge systems on these generators is of limited capacity, it is more like a motorcycle alternator than a belt driven automotive system, it takes much longer to recharge after starting. On my monthly run up, I run 90% listed power until the cooling air shutters are mostly open...
I've only used the 3-stone type. Yes, they work well to remove top cylinder ridges too. I use coarse stones, wrapping a single layer of tape around the bottom of the stones so only the top of the stone contacts the ridge. You can see when the ridge is removed. Far easier than a dedicated ridge...
Aren't top rings chromium or other corrosion resistant alloy? Yes, I would be more concerned with rust in the ring inserts on the pistons causing stuck rings. You should be able to clean them out on complete tear down.
Check the upper right hand fuse, especially the spring clips. They can get weak, causing heating and oxidation. Fuses have tin plated lugs, the spring clips are brass. The copper oxide can become an insulator.
Yes, you can restore tension. Fuses should be difficult to remove with bare fingers.
Agreed on the quality, I first learned oxyacetylene welding back as a teen, self-taught. I also had high school shop where I learned SMAW and GMAW. I picked up GTAW in college but only recently bought a quality GTAW/SMAW machine. I have been in the welding field, mostly in engineering/welding...
Faulty gauge, the needle drags on the dished area of the back plate where the scale is. I took mine apart and bent the needle towards the crystal to correct. The bezel can be carefully pried off to do this.
I managed to take the lever off the injection pump while the pump was still on, it took a great deal of dexterity and a dental mirror to get it back together. Pulling it allowed full cleaning, fortunately the Oldham drive key (part that breaks when pump is gummed) was fine.
Oxidation is the...
My 002a had a stiff throttle lever, I managed to take it apart and clean it with B12 Chemtool carb cleaner, then flushed it with clean diesel. Runs great now.
