Med towbars are heavy enough that they're not fun to lug around. Dunno why you'd want to mess with those unless you're really towing things that require those big 'ol nasty towbars.
That's exactly what I was thinking, except you could use the existing shackle mounts as pivot points and just make the tire carrier offset to one side.
Looks VERY cool, but those M109 boxes aren't very big to start with and there's no way I could give up any more interior space (which a 43"...
That would work, except the towbar couldn't be raised to be vertical because it would hit the bed/box. Would be kinda cool if you made a custom swing-down tire carrier that was mounted to those shackle-mounts though. Would probably need to remove the bumperettes, but that would actually work...
Really? This has got to be one of the easiest-to-work-on and most accessible engine compartments of any truck I've ever worked on. No complaints here. I love that I can sit up on the fenders. I did just get a late-model NOS fiberglass hood though. It's definitely a military - maybe an A3 part...
I think the best way to do that might be to modify the exhaust to create a slip-fit junction, and then use springs to hold the two sections together. Lots of exhaust systems are built this way, and they're quick/easy to take apart (and put beck together).
I think that axle would have been a lot more valuable before ARB lockers became available. I would be interested, but that's what I would be comparing it to price/value-wise. But the fact that I couldn't get any more matching lockers/axles (or parts?) would make me reluctant to go that route...
Thanks man. I'm only planning on carrying one spare most of the time, and that will be mounted on the trailer. But I am going to build a spare tire mount on the back of the truck, just in case I want to go somewhere without the trailer. Even then, I'm not too worried about it, because of those...
I think most experienced fabricators would disagree with you about welding cast steel. I know it's possible, but it's not generally advisable.
I don't know how the OP is planning on modifying the lunette-eye, but I wouldn't hesitate to weld on it if it was mine.
